There are a ton of issues faced by women in society that need tackled and are a just cause imo.

However, some of the current stuff this internet/twitter/blog type feminism seems to fixate on is absolutely ludicrous nonsense.

That scientist wearing a shirt that they deemed offensive after they landed that satellite on the comet and then having to give an apology being the worst recent example.

Some of the articles you get are total heads gone stuff, particularly anything written by Jessica Valenti.

I think this is the frustrating thing. There are legitimate inequalities that I believe need to be addressed, and there are a lot of passionate and committed people trying to do something about it. Sadly there are vocal groups of feminists making a big fuss over small and insignificant issues, which is undermining the good work done by feminists trying to tackle the big issues.

By making such a big fuss over the shirt thing they are making feminism easy to target and dismiss. Sadly this is a trend that seems to plague left-wing ideologies generally.

It's interesting to note here - it'd also be true to say e.g. that Celtic have won so many league titles because they've consistently had the best team in the division, and quality will tell over a season.

And yet, I imagine some people will automatically - and rightly - put much of this down to structural inequalities in football, while still refusing to believe that any such inequalities could exist elsewhere in public life.

f**k me, you said something worthwhile.

Stunned.

Aren't existing inequalities as much to do with people positively discriminating in favour of their friends (e.g. the old boys' network) rather than just negatively discriminating against random people who happen to belong to a certain demographic?

That was just appallingly stupid. It was a man who started it all, a male US journalist thought women might get offended and so the auto-outrage twitter crew went into overdrive before anyone had worked out if anyone was actually offended.

Many of the most serious problems are faced by women with low or no incomes so its not as glamerous as coming down with a bad case of the vapors over a shirt. Twitter gives a voice to the vacuous.

In terms of parliamentary representation, candidates are selected by the party. Could it not be the case that selection of candidates is inherently biased towards selecting white male candidates? Just a thought.

This is also a good point. Many of the more dislikeable feminists are your middle class Caitlin Moran types, while the voices of poor and marginalised women are not heard.

Probably true, but if more women got off their arses, joined and were active in their local parties and stood for selection they could eventually take over. There's a frightening thought. As to your second point, marginally more women than men in politics come out with vomit making politico/business speak instead of English. They all need sending out to the fields and factories with their Humanities degrees stapled to their backs for a spot of re-education.

I think it's difficult to encourage people to stand at Westminster because it seems to be extremely male dominated. I think there's a perception that if you aren't a well off, privately educated white male you'll struggle to get anywhere. Maybe Holyrood will see more female politicians in future with it's more female friendly perception.

^^^ Vladimir Lenin IMO
