Addie
Rock the Casbah is one of my favourite songs. I like it more than the one song TBR's are known for.

paranoid android
what's he famous for apart from Africa? Bob Geldof was lead singer in The Boomtown Rats, and starred in the title role of the major motion picture, The Wall, which was based on, and featured heavily, music from The Pink Floyd album, The Wall. He then went on to co-write one of the biggest selling pop singles of all time, and subsequently helped to raise millions of pounds in an effort to help people who were starving to death. The Boomtown Rats were ok, The Wall (the film) was alright, and Bob Geldof is quite outspoken, and a sort of ok guy. He'll always be remembered as the guy who raised millions for starving bairns. WaffenThinMint
No-one ever doubted The Clash were posh art school boys, but Geldof was the last person that should try and slag them off about it. The Boomtown Rats were an Irish show band with more in common with Showaddywaddy than anypunk band. He is a desperado of ocean going proportions. Erm, actually everyone did - it was airbrushed out of the music press beyond belief, and it was only after Strummer sacked Jones because he was in the huff about "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" doing better than his own "Rock The Casbah" that this with the rest of their dirty laundry hit the mainstream press. The point about Geldof - & for that matter Hugh Cornwell & Tom Robinson - is that they never tried to deny their backgrounds - the Clash did 24/7 out of a ludicrous "poor is cool" mindset, all the while pointing fingers at everyone else for their supposed lack of "credibility". Geldof like Rotten & Idol had a gob on him, but he never sunk to the Clash's level of dirty tricks against people supposed to be their "mates". The Clash & their p***k of a manager Bertie Rhodes also paid large sums of money to the International Socialists/Socialist Workers Party in return for sycophantic reviews from Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill in the previously hostile NME & getting them to wreck "competitors" gigs. As JJ Burnel (who decked both Strummer & Jones twice) said, you simply couldn't trust them not to stick a knife in your back at the first opportunity to advance themselves, something Terry Hall of the Specials also remarked on later. Even Ian "Awkward b*****d" Dury on the sauce was more trustworthy than Strummer or Rhodes sober. Funny you should mention Showaddywaddy - Dave Bartram (who was another precious c**t) never forgave Geldof for asking him in innocence if Jimmy Pursey was his younger brother (Pursey meanwhile found it hilarious, surprisingly considering he could take himself too seriously at times)
a1974h
He was on the one show about a month ago. He was telling a story about how someone wanted him to play a gig somewhere and all he cared about was how much money he was getting. Band Aid made geldoff it would be interesting to where his career, life and bank account would be without it.

He was basically a 1hit wonder from 1979 and that song flopped in the US. Look at other one hit wonders and see how they are getting on. His bank balance would be like mine 0. LongTimeLurker
He has definitely done well to turn doing the vocals on Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays into ongoing celebrity. Bet he didn't really care about the independence issue beyond it being another publicity vehicle.

So it wasn't that well hidden if a kid in Airdrie knew about it. I didn't pay too much attention to the music press other than to find out dates of gigs. ETA. I knew a French girl who wrote to Burnel in French and got a letter back in "French". She said it was the worst attempt at the language she had ever seen. There was a lot of posturing around then, not just by The Clash.

SodjesSixteenIncher
I'd mark him down a total bellend for the following reasons, with the unfortunate addition of the word 'Tory'. Unionist member of the Order of the British Empire. c**t. It does get tiresome when anyone who has the audacity to be wealthy and involved with charity and/or politics gets the same accusations of hypocrisy, self promotion etc. For some reason people can't get enough of really rich people barely hiding the fact that they're in positions of influence to f**k the poor as much as possible and selfishly help their rich pals. But when anyone suggests the opposite, everyone loses their mind about it. It's a strange, very British attitude. We don't mind people being our superiors, as long as they demand this is the case. Disclaimer: Geldof still genuinely a welt though. As you were.
Grim O'Grady
Waff I think it was Bernie not Bertie. Are you munching on the allsorts? I'd like to indulge myself, it's legal. I've had a similar debate surrounding the BTR & their punk credibility elsewhere on t'net. I rather cleverly (in my mind) pointed out that the aforementioned BTR's played all the right punk notes but not necessarily in the right order. I was in the 5th year when Mary was in the 4th it pissed in the navy blue knickers of the polis's don't stand so close to me. Both tracks would make it on the Now That's What I Call Jimmy Savile lp but both they bands were bandwagon jumpers of the punk movement. & funnily enough both it their frontmen are c***s. If I was in Dicky Branson's hot air balloon with Geldders, Sting & Bono I'd take them all out in an act of martyrdom. There was a girl in our class who was the spit of Dave from Showaddywaddy so has pubescent schoolboys are want, we christened her Showaddywaddy, cos either Dave wouldn't have been funny or we didn't know at the time that was his name, thing is I can't remember the lasses real name now. It definitely wasn't Dave. Grimbo.

Any musical movement attracts its share of bandwagon jumpers - the amount of hair metal bands who grew facial hair, got tattoos and "went grunge" in '91/'92 was ridiculous for example. I'd completely forgotten earlier - I know an ex-member of Showaddywaddy. Not the original lineup, but a guitar player that toured with them for a few years in the '90s I think it was.
