Posted this in the Salmond/Cameron etc thread.

Can't say I'm surprised - he's finished. The referendum was his chance to shine and perhaps win his way back into contention for the shadow cabinet with the view to being there if Labour win in May. However, he ran a pretty dreadful campaign which for a while looked as if it may even lose, and any prospects of the shadow cabinet vanished. He has nothing left to achieve in politics either so may as well call it time.

Retiring to spend more time with his money

Doubt it. He will be vying for the supermarket opening circuit along with fatso. He has the Asda opening gig market all to himself as well. Big money there.

Just had to laugh at a wee bit in Darlings' farewell speech:

"My frustration is that we actually won. You can't say it often enough. We made the arguments, we had confidence in ourselves."

Well, I'm not sure it really is the case that a self-confident team needs to go around repeating to anyone who'll listen that they were the winners. A group who have begun realise they've achieved a pyrrhic victory, maybe so.
