Linesmen / Assistant Referees in Junior Football.

The near side linesman who was opposite from the stand had a few howlers in the Cumnock v beith game.

There was one blatant decision he got wrong when a Cumnock player clearly was the last person to put the ball out for a throw in at the near corner and he gave Cumnock the throw in.

Bizzare decision and after a good few moans he replies with " I was too close to it "

The assistant referee does as he is instructed in the referee's pre match brief. Some refs wish for you to be pro-active and others want you just to flag for throw ins and offsides. The assistants only get paid £22.50 for a match, so they ain't doing it for the money. Without the officials you don't have a game, they aren't perfect. Neither are the players, its not an easy task, standing on a touchline having abuse hurled at you whilst trying to concentrate on the game in front of you. Some of the folk that give out the abuse should try refereeing and see how difficult it really is

Once again a refereeing mistake turns our game in exactly the same way as last week. I was standing next to a Medda supporter and he couldn't believe the ref let play go on when our player got fouled and Medda broke downfield and scored

Overall no major complaint about the score at the end though as Medda definitely upped their game in second half whereas Cumnock fell out of it

Ref was absolutely minging all game

What goal was that for?

Equaliser as seen no fouls in build up but may have missed it?!?!

The Medda 3rd goal . Referee never stopped the game when the Medda player went through the back of the Cumnock player over in front of the enclosure , just up from the dugouts.

The ball was moved up the park and we list the goal.

Yes we should have defended better

Yes the ref was shit all game

Yes, at that point the Medda were the better team

None of those things make it right when he doesn't give a foul he was looking straight at and he was at it all game

The Medda no 2 got booked for what looked like a fairly routine challenge which, while it may have been a foul, was questionable if it was worthy of a booking

Literally 2 minutes ( if that) after he was booked , he had a mad swipe at a Cumnock player and the referee just ignored it

The second incident was probably borne out of frustration , but, I have seen folk sent of for less.

It was obvious he was shitting himself to book the guy again as he would have had to have sent him off

All through the game , on a pitch that was like am ice rink for long periods of the game, he was happy to blow for fouls when there was little or no contact, but allowed instances of players going through the back of opponents and leading with their arm into challenges etc etc and just turning a blind eye

To be fair he was equally bad to both teams

Better team deserved the 3 points on the back of the second half performance

it is the referee who will decide what he wants the assistants to do in the game. Remember that the name changed from linesmen to assistant referees for that very reason.

There are a lot of signals between a ref and assistants that some people may not notice. For example when the ball goes out of play the referee will signal the direction if he is absolutely 100% sure which way the throw in is to go. The assistant is told to put the flag straight up in the air with the flag in the hand they are intending to award the throw (right hand for attacking team, left hand for defending team) with the other arm held across the body. If the referee signals the same way the assistants then point the flag that way. So whilst people will see an assistant with the flag straight up they will be signalling which way they would award the throw. If the ref is unsure they will go with the assistant’s opinion.

There are other signals that are dependent on where the assistant is standing at the time. If an assistant thinks there has been a penalty they will hold the flag across their chest. The SFA does not encourage the “mardi-gras” like waving of the flag above the head in these situations

Some referees (Willie Collum for example) tell assistants to flag for off sides and at throw ins to always hold the flag up then go with the way points. Other refs such as Calum Murrray will encourage assistants to be active in their area of the field and typically police the area from the edge of the penalty (between the box and sideline) up the field.

Refs are different and will ask for different things from different assistants.

It is right that the ideal balance is an experienced assistant with a younger one learning the game. The experienced assistant can also help an inexperienced referee in their early days at a higher level.

Assistant referees in the juniors and seniors now have to go to official referee training and have to reach a certain fitness level to be able to participate regularly at that level

In the North Superleague each Assistant is paid £25. The clubs voted to have Assistants at every Superleague fixture. Incidentally the ref gets £47.50, so that £97.50 for a set of officials for each game. In general terms the officials in the North, especially in the Aberdeen area, are very good.

Both teams pay for an assistant each for games involving 3 officials in the North.

In the North Region the home club pays for all three officials in Superleague games. In cup ties and the East and West Divisions each club pays for one assistant. The exact rule is as follows:

13. In all Superleague matches assistant referees are to be appointed, (unless under extreme circumstances), the Secretary has the power to approve a match proceeding without assistants. The cost of assistant referees to be the responsibility of the home club. In all other matches The Regional Secretary, or his agent, shall have the power to appoint assistant referees to any game as and when they are available. The cost of such assistant referees to be shared equally by the competing Clubs.

The money in East and West (which is £45 and £22.50) is not dissimilar

According to this:

http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/resources/documents/RefereeAppointments/LowlandLeague/8.%20Lowland%20League%20Appointments%20-%20Wednesday%203rd%20September%202014.pdf

rates in LL are somewhat higher, at £55 for referees plus expenses. Also £32 for assistant.

My son is a ref and he swears by having assistants, it makes his job so much easier. He tells his assistants to referee the game when play is closer to them than him.

that's the way it should be. Lost count how many times we have young assistants and they only do offsides and if the ball goes out everything else they look at the ref who's obviously told them am the ref don't get involved

Trotter1962??. SFA referees have never followed the English FA with the flag across the chest for penalties as any ref allowing an assistant to do this would be questioned yo why this was in the pre match talk. For throw ins the flag is held in left hand until ball out of play quick look at ref if tight decision and move flag into right hand below waist if required. For a foul flag above head gently waving with the hand you require for giving the direction of the foul.
