CityDave
Missed most of the action yesterday due to work, it would have been great getting information around the country for the thread as the storm was happening. Met Office Weather warnings still in effect for everywhere north of the midlands but as from tomorrow concern shifts to the south of England with gale force winds and heavy rain. There has been talk of the possibility of a Sting jet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_jetas the storm moves east towards the continent, we will see if this does develop during tonight and tomorrow, we will certainly know about it if it does happen. Do the Daily Express know about this yet? This is a good satelitte animation http://www.yr.no/satellitt/europa_animasjon.html showing the storm to the north of us last night and where it is currently. The jet stream is currently right over the country http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=jetstream;sess= and is influencing the southern part of the storm and pulling in two fronts from the Atlantic, this surface pressure chart predicts a separate low pressure system developing over southern England during today. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/surface-pressure/#?tab=surfacePressureColour&fcTime=1418212800 Sleet showers in Inverness just now, a couple of flashes of lightning last night. Plenty of lightning strikes showing up on the radar just now as they have been over the last couple of days. Again the force field around Inverness has held and protected us here from the worst. CityDave
Lightning detector - ATD http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=lightning;sess= Also this this map shows the potential Good to see (erm ??) unless you live in the borders or in Dumfries that this time most of us won't be affected at all, in fact so much so that we will have absolutely no weather at all tonight and everything north of Arbroath will vanish.

Jacksgranda
Any activity on the Sperrins? Sperrins update - blanketed in snow, quite picturesque from the safety of the A42. Probably been snowcapped for the last couple of days, but as I have been taking the back road to work, I haven't seen them. Due to last night's sharp frost I decided to take the main road today, to avoid "hazardous driving conditions".
Jacksgranda
Around 60mph + here. The bay windows of my executive penthouse property are being buffeted slightly. I'm old enough to remember when a 'weather bomb' was called 'a storm'. 'not unexpected for this time of year'.

CityDave
I had never seen Thunder and Lighting during a blizzard until yesterday. Mental Its been quite weird seeing lightning during a snow shower but each time hearing no thunder, you must have been closer to hear it than I was. Reporter Jim Cantore pretty much shits himself in the first vid, then gets a little exited in the 2nd vid. HOLY SMOKE!! I don't think most of us would have chosen our words that carefully.
CityDave
Is the Cockbridge-Tomintoul road closed yet? It is now, also the A93 at Braemar and the B974 between Fettercairn and Banchory.
CityDave
5,000 lightning strikes, not bad eh? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-30453216 Looks like we are back to the snow showers through the night, but they don't seem as highly concentrated as yesterday. Hopefully most football matches won't be affected tomorrow. http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ Edited December 12, 2014 by CityDave

FlyerTon
From: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/uk-weather-polar-vortex-bring-4810075 "A polar vortex is expected to bring Siberian weather to Britain over Christmas, causing travel chaos for millions. Forecasters predict storms, snow, ice and temperatures as low as -12C. The Met Office said a weakening of the polar vortex – the North Pole’s dominant low pressure system – will block mild weather from the West and allow a cold front to arrive from the East"
