The Storms & Severe Weather Thread

This is a useful site I've come across (tis' for surfers),http://magicseaweed.com/news/black-wednesday-swell-for-north-atlantic/7017/nice animation of the storm as it moves towards us. I've heard concerns about high tides and the possibility that a storm surge could cause problems.

This chart looks worrying (below) with that storm's pressure dropping as much as 950mb in the center with those tightly packed millibars to the south, that's going to be a beast if it happens and the west coast is going to get the worst of it.

The isobars on the Met Office forecast pressure chart for Wednesday on the link look tightly squeezed. 940mb low.

Current forecast winds showing sustained westerly at 41mph, whipped in gusts 71mph, later veering NW.

Met Office surface pressure chart from Sunday to Thursday, you can see how the pressure drops in the storm system only starting to lift as it reaches the UK.

According to these charts the beast is created when the two low pressure systems meet just to the south of Greenland and intensifies during tomorrow.

In Inverness we've had sleet showers on and off all day this falling as snow just a couple of hundred feet above sea level. It has been going from a clear blue sky to almost night time within 15 minutes.

The Traffic Scotland site has warned drivers on the A93 between Glenshee and Ballater to take extra care due to snow. http://trafficscotland.org/Looks like Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders are getting the snow just now as the traffic cams are showing. http://trafficscotland.org/map/index.aspx?type=26

Met Office Yellow warnings out for tomorrow for everywhere north of the midlands for storm force winds, this is in effect from tomorrow night until Friday. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1418083200&regionName=he

Supposed to be heavy snow due for the Highlands tomorrow, mix that with the winds probably not a good day for hill walking.

Temperature in Inverness currently at -0.5c.

Yellow warning of high winds out early for next Wednesday, 10th Dec.
Currently yellow, but expect this to be upgraded to amber if the 70mph gusts are expected nearer the time.

High wind warning now upgraded to an amber in some areas.

"Very large swell generated over the Atlantic to the south of the very deep depression will lead to exceptionally large waves affecting west coasts"

80mph winds? In NW Scotland that is let the dug sleep in the scullery and dont leave the washing out over night.

Down in the SE of England that would be Cobra meetings, all transport cancelled and Tesco running out of tinned food.
