The Storms & Severe Weather Thread

Well, looks like another mild autumn/winter is already upon us with the coming of the first big storm of the season which will be Post-Tropical Cyclone Gonzalo or Gonzo for short.

I'm going to keep this thread going through until the end of winter and if you want to post information, photos, weather warnings or even if you want to post your experiences of extreme weather post here.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for much of the UK for Tuesday and this is to be prepared. The west of Scotland is expected to have gales and heavy rain tomorrow evening.

Net weather is a cool site as it has an excellent lightning detector and an excellent forum.

Weather Underground although is USA based is a very good site and has the latest North Atlantic Storm information such as on Gonzalo http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/2014/hurricane-Gonzalo

Now thinking of keeping this thread going through to the end of June, the end of the StormChasing season in the USA. :thumsup2

FlyerTon will be absolutely motherfucking seething.

A storm is any disturbed state of an environment or astronomical body's atmosphere especially affecting its surface, and strongly implying severe weather.

The English word comes from Proto-Germanic *sturmaz meaning "noise, tumult".

I'm hoping for lots of storm strength winds over the next few months so I can get dived in to the overtime at work. Man's gotta live.

I remember last winter I spent a whole day just transferring people into your apartment when they called us up.

Didn't get any overtime though.....

Stormy Tuesday
Issued on 20/10/2014 at 16:42
Valid From: 20/10/2014 at 16:20 until 21/10/2014 at 15:00
Weather type:
Gales
Alert risk period:
20/10/14 22:00 until 21/10/14 17:00
Alert details:
The UK is in for wet and windy weather from Monday night into Tuesday as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo move through.

Winds -Recently it has been blustery across the UK but winds will only strengthen overnight with strong SW winds veering to gale force NW winds during Tuesday as a band of rain moves eastwards in the morning. Overnight gusts of 50mph in the SW'ly winds are likely for western Britain, with gusts of 60-70mph in the NW'ly during Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the strongest winds will be affecting NE Scotland and the Northern Isles and still blowing through the North Channel into the Irish Sea. Coastal parts of Scotland could see severe NW'ly gales, Western Isles, the West coast through N.Channel later Tuesday morning and N.Isles, NE Scotland later Tuesday afternoon. By Tuesday evening it will be eastern England with the strong NW winds and there are low level flood alerts for E.Anglia

Rain - Western and SW Scotland, Cumbria, Lancs. and Snowdonia could see 40mm of rain. Heavy rain will move over N.Ireland and W.Scotland Monday night and then set in for NW England, W.Wales and southern Scotland. Many parts of the UK could see a wet start on Tuesday but western Britain will have the heavy and persistent rain. Adding on the strong and gusty winds, there will be difficult driving conditions on the roads, possible restrictions on bridges, it's that time of year for leaves causing problems, and for northern Britain it will be worth checking with ferry operators.

Flooding - W.Scotland will see some high rainfall totals this week as will Cumbria, which could lead to localised flooding. There are some high tides due on Tuesday around the coasts of England and Wales with alerts already out for overtopping and spray in the strong winds. There are concerns for the coasts of E.Anglia later on Tuesday as the strong winds hit combined with a high tide. More details on the Environment Agency website and from SEPA

Surely the Daily Express is the de-facto source for storms and severe weather news.

After having picked up the blue wheelie bin three times this morning I've conceded and stuck it in the garage until this all blows over.

No doubt I'll be out sticking the green and brown ones in it too as the day progresses.

Fair blowing a hoolie here.
