Slavia failed to bring any players before the deadline apart from two loan players. The loss of players hasn't appeared to have caused to many issues, a credible draw with Inter Milan followed up with a derby win against Sparta at the weekend leaves Slavia 3 points clear over Plzen after 10 games. They have only conceded 2 goals domestically.

They retain the key to the city after yesterdays victory.

Including this stunning goal

Slavia opened up a six point gap over Plzen at the weekend after a 2-0 win away to Jablonec, another clean sheet for Slavia means that they have conceded just two goals in the 12 league games to date.

On the European front, they earned a credible draw against Inter in the Champions League but were unfortunate to lose 2-0 to Dortmund last week. They play Barcelona in the next round of fixtures.

Plzen suffered a second defeat of the season to Mlada Boleslav who moved above Jablonec in the table. Sparta won 4-0 at the weekend but currently sit in 7th place, They have a horrendous defensive record and have one of the worst footballers I have ever seen, Costa Nhamoinesu  think of a combination of Effe Ambrose and Pepe.

Slightly worrying news this week, Prague and Beijing cancelled a joint partnership agreement meaning China is withdrawing investment in the city, Slavia are currently part owned by the CITIC group, a Chinese state owned company. The deal was always a bit sketchy and there were protests when the new owners re-named the Eden stadium The Sinobo arena last year.

The finance helped pay for a stadium museum, team bus and a Slavia liveried jet and a team to reach the group stages of the Champions league but the Czech president has called in to question the continuation of the funding after the ending of the sister city deal. The deal ended after the Prague council objected to the "one China" principle.

Slavia's Eden stadium holds under 20,000 fans, the domestic TV deal is much the same as the BT sport deal in Scotland with the majority of Czechs choosing to follow English football, the ability for Slavia to perform at this level without the current level of investment is pretty slim.

Half way point in the regular Czech season, Slavia have opened up an 11 point gap over 2nd place Plzen after the last round of fixtures.

Slavia tweeted some stats after their 4-0 win over Ostrava at the weekend which goes some way to explaining the gap at the top of the Fortuna league.

15 Games

13 Wins
2 Draws

33 goals

3 conceded

12 clean sheets.

They were knocked out of the Czech cup, 2-0 away to Ostrava at the last 16 stage. and are currently putting up a great fight in the Champions league "group of death" and got a credible draw away at Inter, the double header is against Barcelona where they were unlucky to come away with nothing. Captain Soucek has been outstanding all season, I would expect a decent move to Germany or Italy soon. He is the clubs top scorer with 7 goals this season. This has been one of the biggest differences with Czech football and Scottish football, there are no real regular goalscorers for any team.

Plzen have been inconsistent, not as bad as Sparta who currently sit in sixth, 17 points behind Slavia. Zlin, who have overachieved the last few years have slumped to 13th.

There are 5 rounds of fixtures left before the 2 month winter break.

The final round of fixtures of 2019 were played this weekend before the winter shut-down. the remaining 10 games of the pre-playoff phase will start on the 15th of February.

Slavia continue to dominate, a 4-1 victory over Ceske Budejovice  at the weekend was only the fourth goal Slavia have conceded in the league after twenty games played. Unsurprisingly, they have yet to be beaten on the league. The only domestic defeat was to Ostrava in the national cup.

Despite losing a number of big players in the summer and only signing domestic loans, it has been a very good season so far, The Champions league campaign has a Scottish feel about it. lots of plaudits and great performances but ultimately a failure, they finished fourth in a group they had little hope of getting out of.

The upcoming window may see 1-2 players leave, Soucek has became a big player for the national team and stood out in the Champions league, Kolar the goalkeeper has been exceptional, becoming the first keeper to keep a clean sheet at the Nou Camp since 2012. With no European competition, I would be surprised if any players came in.

Elsewhere, Plzen are currently 16 points behind in second, their manager left after the weekends fixtures, Sparta are currently clinging on in fourth.

Two years ago, Plzen won all 20 of their first league games and struggled to win again the rest of the season, almost losing the league, so the title is not a forgone conclusion for Slavia, having lost big players in the summer, there is a concern that losing one or two more could turn them in to an average side.

Slavia announced the travelling squad to their winter training camp in Marbella with two notable exceptions, Czech international Midfielder Josef Husbauer and club legend Milan Skoda. Both have been given permission to speak to clubs about moves to other Non-Czech teams.

Husbauer is a classy midfielder, great passer of the ball and occasionally comes up with something really special, He has been in and out of the team this year with Trpisovsky preferring more industry than flair. He is rumoured to be moving to a German team.

Skoda will be a real miss. He signed for Slavia when they were looking like they were going to be relegated and possibly out the game due to financial issues. At the age of 28 He signed from Bohemians where he wasn't exactly a stand-out, but went on to become Slavias modern day top goal scorer, Club captain and a Czech international. Turning 34 this month and with his contract up at the end of the season, it looks like he is off to either the middle east or China for a final payday.

Jacob Hromada is also leaving on loan, heading to Liberic.

Skoda has in fact signed for Rizespor in Turkey. Also moving out is Mick Van Buren, on loan to Den Hagg Leaving Slavia with two signed forwards, Hilal, who has played nine times this season, mostly as substitute, and Stanislav Tecl, a constantly injured Czech international who has scored eight goals in four seasons for Slavia.

Another player leaving Slavia this window, club captain and Czech international Tomas Soucek joined West Ham on an initial 6 month loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer. Slavia will receive an initial 4.5 million Euros + 16 million if the move becomes permanent.

Massive loss to Slavia, best player, top scorer and club captain, joined the club at 17 and has 20 caps for the Czech national team.

The Czech season returned from the winter break at the weekend. Slavia lost a number of big players during the window and only made a few internal transfers, Patrik Hellebrand from Slovako, Lako Takacs from Mlada Boleslav, Lukas Provod from Viktoria Plzen and Mohamed Tjani, a Cote d'Ivoire National, signed from Jihlava.

Viktoria Plzen, already a distant second didn't strengthen much during the window either. Sparta, currently in fifth sacked their manager after a defeat to mid-table Liberec at the weekend. Plzen returned with a 3-0 victory away to second bottom Opava.

Slavia went in to Sundays "away" match against Bohemians having not lost a game in the league since the 21st of April last year and hadn't conceded a goal to Bohemians for 595 minutes..........................Slavia lost 1-0

Who play in possibly the most bland strips in modern day football.

A lot of people in Dresden seem to believe they are still living in the DDR, none of that bourgeois Wessi stuff for them.

The Czech League has put a plan forward to have the league finish its current campaign, with the proposed re-start of the 25th May. There will be a vote on the 12th of May by all clubs to approve the plan. The proposal includes two matches a week with the season drawing to a close on the 12th July.

If the clubs vote against the plan, there will be no Champions or relegated teams, the European places would be decided by league placings.

With no automatic qualification to the Champions league this year, Slavia would enter the third qualifying stage and Plzen at the second stage. Sparta are not currently in one of the qualification places.

Players not contracted beyond this season and do not want a temporary extension will not be forced to play, Players already joining a new club will not move until the conclusion of this season, should it extend in to August.
