Black Sabbath - Paranoid. The title track is one of the weakest on here. 'Nuff said, I think.

Rush - Fly by Night (Although Caress of Steel kinda qualifies, with respect to Mr Rutsey). The professor's first lp with the band, and one of their most accessible.

Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I'm always going to go for Neil in these lists, but this is an absolute classic.

Rainmakers - Tornado. Built on the impressive debut (which featured "Let my People Go-Go"), and set a pattern of story-driven (Lakeview Man) and "political" (Government Cheese) rock which has tickled my ears since the mid-80s. Interestingly, they're massive in Missouri and Scandinavia, and almost nowhere else.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks. Always appears on "best ever" lists - and there's a reason for that. One grumpy old fúck, but by hell can he write and perform.

Tough category. In many cases these are bands that had good first albums as well.

1. James Gang. James Gang Rides Again (songs like Funk #49, Ashes, the Rain and I and more)

2. Eagles. Desperado (my favourite Eagles album - Bitter Creek is awesome)

3. Radiohead. The Bends.

4. Mark Knopfler. Sailing to Philadelphia. (just a quality album)

5. Barnstorm. The Smoker You Play The Drinker You Get (released as a Joe Walsh solo album by the record label, but they were a band. Joe Walsh has said as much)

  1. Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth
  2. Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
  3. Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
  4. Death - Leprosy
  5. Mr Bungle - Disco Volante

Mr Bungle was the first to spring to mind because the difference in quality between the first two albums was huge. Just scrolled through the MP3 folder to 'D' after that

Carole King - Tapestry

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent...

Declan O'Rourke - Big Bad Beautiful World

Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen

(Like any of my musical favourites list, this would most likely be very different tomorrow)

Arctic Monkeys- Favourite Worst Nightmare

Elvis Costello and The Attractions- Armed Forces

Weezer- Pinkerton

Technically correct about Elvis & The Attractions of course but I always think of 'This Years Model'  as being Elvis Costello's 2nd LP and it's better than 'Armed Forces ' for me.

The Exploited - Troops of Tomorrow
 Rammstein - Sehnsucht
