General Election 2015

There seems to be a predominant opinion on here (from younger, more impressionable posters, I reckon) that the idea of "life experience" is dismissible as an excuse for those who don't get on. Walesa was a working man (plumber iirc) who achieved great things without the benefit of university, management training, leadership courses or any of the theoretical knowledge it appears is now necessary to get into a position where you influence the lives of millions.

What Walesa had was the support of his Union, the courage of his convictions, and a determination to do what was right. In particular, he acted according to the wishes of his constituents, not according to how his actions would affect opinion polls. He acted in a way that was good for people, not good for business.

Unfortunately, fewer and fewer voters were even born back then - the TU movement is now seen as a negative force, and "Socialist" is actually used as an insult, most ironically by the American Right, who love their bible-bashing. Because Jesus would have joined the Republicans, wouldn't he?

Fun fact: the number of credible historians who attribute the success (not to the mention the failures) of both Lech Walesa and Solidarity to its leaders' unquantifiable degree of "life experience" is precisely zero.

That's before we even entertain the notion that Lech Walesa is a credible benchmark for the "life experience" cohort in post-industrial Scotland.

What a weird obsession you have to grind arguments into one dimensional aspects.

You want to know why he's deluded for thinking that at the age of 22 (?) he has sufficient life experience to effectively represent tens of thousands of constituents, some of whom may be in dire need of his help?

It would be like putting a toddler in charge of a tractor and expecting fresh straight plough lines.

To be fair, that's possible, you get GPS navigation modules for tractors these days that work in tandem with the driver to keep the vehicle on a straight track. You could also buy off the shelf components, GPS module, Microcontroller, accelerometers, Analog devices even do a full 6 axis MEMS differential navigation module - basically you could turn the tractor into automated drone with the operator only there to control acceleration, and step in if something goes tits up.

I digress, but if you put a sufficient support system in place, you can correct most individual short comings.

That article is absolutely GLORIOUS

A third, when asked how things were looking in Scotland, simply formed his hand into a gun, raised it to his mouth and pulled the trigger.

SNP sacked a teacher in Dundee so they could keep the alcohol allowance. Priorities, eh.

With spin like that you should be working for Murphy. What happened was that a principle teacher position was axed as part of a mammoth round of council cuts. At the last hour a councillor proposed that the 44 grand this saved could instead be taken from the budget for council refreshments and hospitality. When it came to a vote the original plan passed. Guess what Labour did during that vote?

They very strongly abstained?

That was my exact favourite line

The telegraph are having a field day in that article.

Belter, likes.

Meanwhile, I found a leaflet from the Lib Dems posted through my door when I got in a wee while ago.

It was immediately crumpled up and thrown straight in the paper recycling. 8)

Good luck Ad Lib. I'm in East Renfrewshire. To be fair, I think it's only oaksoft who's had a dig but you're sticking your head above the parapet.

You should definitely get some pamphlets with a headline of "I strongly advise you to vote Lib-Dem"
