It's not me and I didn't read about it, as I'm alone in the house at the moment.[emoji20]

You thought spiders, snakes and sharks were bad enough? Now it;s the sand that's going to get you. She was either pished, drugged or a fucking nutter or had never been to a beach in her life as things do tend to get a bit hot when it's over 40 degrees.

Barbecue tongs not good for snake control, especially in a place with a funny name.

AN ELDERLY Yorkeys Knob man has been remembered as a selfless and “very pleasant fellow” after succumbing to taipan bites he sustained in his home last week.

David Pitt, 77, lost his fight for life in Cairns Hospital yesterday after almost a week in intensive care.

He was secretary at the Cairns Freemasons’ Temple Memorial Lodge and a member at the Yorkeys Knob Golf Club. Lodge Master Colonel Lawson said he would be missed.

“He always had his eye open for where there might be an opportunity for our lodge to contribute to the community,” he said.

“It is a great shock, a great disappointment and great sadness that his life has come to end via this incident.”

Mr Pitt had been in a critical condition after he was bitten twice on his foot last week, when he found the snake in a bedroom and tried to remove it using a pair of kitchen tongs.

Family and friends have rallied around Mr Pitt’s wife, including his two daughters who have flown from England.

Yesterday the family said it was too early to talk about his death.

“His family are doing it tough as you would expect. As any family would through circumstances like that,” Mr Lawson said.

Mr Lawson said Mr Pitt was “very committed” to the community and welfare of others.

A report into his death will be sent to the coroner.

Qualified Cairns snake catcher Matt Hagan said it was a “shocking event”.

“It is so unfortunate it ended up in his bedroom and heartfelt condolences go to his family,” he said.

“There was a snake catcher from Rockhampton who died this year from a taipan bite.

“I have caught taipans around Yorkeys Knob and Smithfield before, so there is a population there. We just hardly see them.”

Mr Hagan said it was important to keep your distance with all snakes, especially in a confined space.

“This is the most dangerous scenario because the snake feels threatened and it doesn’t have a lot place to go,” he said.

“You really need to allow good distance between you and snake. From a snake’s perspective it is under a lot of stress and the only defence they have is to strike out.”
