Wings of Steel (George Robertson, Motherwell and The Wednesday)

Recommended Posts

Wings of Steel by Iain Paterson is the result of a decades long search for information about his great uncle, described then as the best outside left in Britain, and rewrites much that has been previously written about him, especially of his latter life in the USA. Today George Clarke Robertson is a virtual unknown but in the pre-WWI period was a highly respected player with Motherwell, Sheffield Wednesday and Scotland. The book gives a record of George's career chapter by chapter with each match he played in as described from the contemporary press, of his major part in The Wednesday getting their Owls nickname and the not by any means insignificant role he played in the riot after Scotland's game in Dublin in 1913. Iain's use of official census and immigration records from both sides of the Atlantic as well as shipping manifests, are inspirational and result in the chapters on much of George's later life in the USA being rewriting.

George Robertson's football career was cut short by The Great War but this excellent book celebrates what he achieved in the time he had.

Running at 192 pages with a number of superb photographs this excellent book is available from Pitch Publishing for £14.99
