@capt_oats Fancy giving us O'Hara and Grisham? We will give you Elliott as back-up in return.

Grimshaw's a weird one. He was originally signed by Baraclough as a midfielder before he was recalled by Man U and sold to Preston.

When we took him back he kind of found a niche as a right back but was back-up to both Cadden and Tait at RWB/right back for ages but as @RossBFaeDundee says he made the RB position his own in the season we finished 3rd and pretty much kept Tait on the bench that season.

However, the reason SOD came in was that Grimshaw's form kind of went off a cliff at the start of last season whether that was a result of the extended Covid break or just he didn't really deal with being first choice particularly well IDK but his levels definitely dropped and both Carroll and McGinley were out with long term injuries which left us short of full backs. Hence O'Donnell doing us a turn because he lives 5 minutes away.

It's been mentioned a fair bit in our thread but yesterday was Grimshaw's first first team game since the New Year loss to Accies. He's been out since then with glandular fever which is why there's a fair amount of frustration that we chose yesterday to give him his first start in 8 months AND stick him alongside a boy making his debut who's new to Scottish fitba' (experienced as he is).

I've no idea what Alexander's position on Grimshaw or O'Hara is as Grimmy hasn't been available to him since January while Lanarkshire's #1 concussion specialist has been out the side more than he's been in it since Alexander came in.

Have said time and time again that Cammy gets unfair criticism from a section of the support. We know he isn't a great crosser of the ball but tbf neither is Elliot.

He gets the criticism because he isn't very good. He tries certainly but that's about it. If he was a back up player I'd be happy enough but sadly this isn't the case. He is better than Elliot no question in that. It's our weakest position in the squad. Sadly I don't seeing this being fixed just yet.

Said already our squad overall seems fairly week soon as suspensions and injuries come our way.

Tommy said the attendance from yesterday's game was around 3,700, with about 700 Motherwell fans.

We can show them a proper away support in two weeks time.

Big cup draw for us today, anyone but the OF and we have a great shout at making Hampden.

Hopefully Byrne makes it next week but if not I'd bring in McGowan or Anderson. Essential we keep McCowan out wide.

Panter will have to come in and perform. It's all good and well saying he's young, inexperienced etc but McPake has chosen him as our LB backup and we require a job next week.

Fully confident we'll compete well and let's hope it comes off for us points wise.

Forward we go.

Thank you.

I've not been slow in slaughtering Fontaine at times so have to hold my hands up, yesterday I finally noticed the difference he makes to the defence. Don't think Ashcroft and Fontaine are anywhere near top flight quality CH's but they're proving formidable as a pairing.

Reminds me slightly of the Frazer Wright and Steven Anderson partnership at St Johnstone.

If St Johnstone make it to the UECL Group Stages, they'll have to play 3 games in 6 days that week, with our QF the last of those. Would make up for the fact that we'll be playing United 3 days before the tie.

Struggling to see that happen, but hope it does for the coefficient.

Neither are world beaters that’s for sure but I can’t remember the last partnership we had that was any better. Getting McGhee back in midfield alongside Byrne makes a big difference to the defence. I’m beginning to think McGhee is a truly class player.

McGhee and Byrne are McPake's two stand out signings for me.

Here's our list of players free to speak to other clubs in January. Any we should be putting a contract in front of now?

#4: Liam Fontaine (35) - May 2022

#14: Lee Ashcroft (27) - May 2022

#16: Christie Elliott (30) - May 2022

#8: Shaun Byrne (27) - May 2022 (Option of further year) - Hopefully that's just a formality.

#10: Paul McGowan (33) - May 2022

#11: Declan McDaid (25) - May 2022

#26: Charlie Adam (35) - May 2022

#7: Alex Jakubiak (24) - May 2022

#9: Danny Mullen (26) - May 2022

#35: Jason Cummings (25) - May 2022

Ashcroft, Byrne and Cummings. Fontaine seems to want to coach so if we have a space, then fine. Adam I suspect has designs further up the tree. I’ve seen nothing of the game yesterday. What was Adam like?

He did fine. He sprayed a few class balls about as usual but was better in a defensive side with a few timely clearances more than anything to write home about creatively. He looked absolute gubbed for the last half an hour. Looked like he took a sore one as he was limping for a fair bit.

Purely based upon an ongoing improvement from our existing current playing squad and coaching positions from the expiry of existing contracts May 2022 as highlighted by @Ludo*1 .

Lee Ashcroft, Shaun Byrne and to a lesser extent Danny Mullen can now appear to be great squad members who can be relied upon consistently or otherwise at this level to make a positive contribution, imho.

Jason Cummings' possesses something very special and should be treated contractually accordingly, preferably before he decides to move on prior to swapping him for Scott Allan. Again imho

Charlie Adam is the future of our club on so many levels, that will never waver I truly hope.

Obviously Liam Fontaine is also doing himself no harm on the playing side at 35, fitness permitting. Especially if availing himself to the coaching side also at the moment.

Retain what we have at this time prior to December, sign Greg Stewart asap to cover numerous positions and make a realistic offer which in fairness wouldn't break our finances to secure Stephen O'Donnell from Motherwell. Albeit he's now under contract there until Summer 2023 and the right back position is thereby secured.

O'Donnell with all due respect is contracted to Motherwell FC, or alternatively preferably sign Mark O'Hara instead to cover again numerous positions.

Merely, my ongoing opinion.
