He certainly wasn't glued to his line that night he played against Raith to become the oldest player ever in professional Scottish football. Played better than the majority of the keepers we have had since. I asked Tommy Young if there was footage of it about 6 or so month ago but it seems it's been deleted over time!

Had to laugh at him admitting he shat his pants when he saw Bullock was injured.

15th in our all time appearance list. Only behind Bill Marsh and Ally Donaldson in terms of keepers on the list. Served us with distinction.

Geddes was in the main a brilliant keeper for us, capable of some truly miraculous saves (there were a couple of Tannadice Derbies in 86/7 and 87/8 where he pulled off frankly ludicrous saves to deny Eamonn Bannon in a 3-0 win in November 86 and John Clark and Mixu Paatelainen in November 87 in a 3-1 win. They're still on youTube. He was however capable of the very occasional howler, the worst I recall being him diving over a couple of tame long range shots at Dens against the Dabs in a Forfarshire Cup Final (in the 87/88 season where we played the c***s about 9 times 😂 ). He was totally unafraid of coming out for crosses as well and had a weird kicking style as a result of a near-catastrophic knee injury in 81.

Definitely a Dundee legend imo.

Speaking of his kicking - I used to watch him in the warm-up and he was fucking deadly at the crossbar challenge and would take on all comers pretty much every week. Often thought if football ended up developing a specialist sub just to take set-pieces like some other sports, then he had a future career in him yet.

That and he didn't like anyone fucking about with the fourth official's board and often just commandeered it even at away fixtures instead of the actual fourth official are my two favourite petty memories of the man.

A proper 80s keeper 😂

I'm pretty sure he was called up a Scotland squad once or twice and was also used as one of the "over age" players in the U-21s.

Think the goalkeeping/coaching set up needed refreshed, upgraded. IMO. Was probably a bit harsh, would rank him alongside Donaldson and Allan and, as TCM pointed out, a trilogy of very good keepers.

Totally agree.

I just hope that it's never given to Derek fucking Soutar like some are trying to tout on Twitter.

I wonder if there's any chance McPake will be after Hazard again. Celtic will almost certainly be signing a keeper and that'll leave them heavily stocked with Bain, Varkas, new goalkeeper, Hazard and Doohan. Something will need to give.

Doubt Hazard would be keen on being a benchwarmer, however.

Doohan looks pretty much free to go considering he had a couple of loan spells at County & United last season.

Solid prediction.

b*****d. It hurts being right sometimes.

ETA: I'd be much happier if it was a permanent deal tbf.

Just read the piece on the club website about him. I'd totally forgotten about his testimonial against Liverpool in 89. They just pissed about really but were absolutely fantastic to watch. Liverpool were decent also.

I know he hasn't been here very long but if Mullen is more trusted than him to hold the ball up and lead the line in those play-off games, he's not a guaranteed starter for us in a harder league.

You'd imagine he'll be on too good money for the club to be overjoyed with the return if he's not a regular starter and you'd think he himself would be pretty unhappy at that and forcing a move. There was a truth in his comical drunken speech, he was signed to be a big player for us from day one.

Not too drudge this discussion back up, but would you consider Cummings a big game player? Idk if I would necessarily, Mullen genuinely seems to be more of that type who shows up when it's most needed in those big games (i.e. the play-off games for us & St Mirren) while Cummings doesn't seem to have as much of that, but is far more consistent at finding the net as a whole over the course of a season.

Just taking the playoff matches alone, one obvious difference between the two was that Mullen was far more involved in the game than Cummings was when he was on the pitch. Cummings spent a lot of time drifting out to the channels and wings to try and receive the ball in space, whereas Mullen stayed more central and was still happy to take the ball,  even though he does tend to drop deep and come and get it. I wonder if part of that is that Mullen takes an instruction better than Cummings, or it's just a straightforward difference in what each player is comfortable doing. I think Mullen is by far the more effective playing as the lone striker in a team that isn't likely to have as much of the ball as their opponent, whereas Cummings to me really looks like a number 9 who needs to be playing with a target man to feed off, or in front of a 10, to get the best out of him.

Was the Liverpool game not for George McGeachie? Long time ago tbf :)

They came up in either 87 or 88 for George McGeachie and won 4-0 and again for Bobby (3-1). I didn't get to George's game but i think they basically played the starting 11 from their obscenely good 87-88 season and were magnificent.

Yup, the Liverpool team that turned up for McGeachie's testimonial was something else. This was right at the point where John Barnes was at his absolute peak and ripping up defences for toilet paper week-in, week-out. I remember Dalglish coming on, sitting in the midfield, and spraying passes around that were 2 yards ahead of even Barnes' anticipation. Different class altogether, and Dalglish was practically a part-time player only by that point.

I think Cummings looks good playing in a front 2 but lost playing as a loan striker. Mullen fitted the bill perfectly for playing as the loan striker against Killie in the playoffs against their slow centreback pairing. Not really been impressed by Mullen but he was very good in the those playoff games against Killie and hopefully he continues like that.

Definitely need another striker tho.

Lots of Mullen and Cummings references, where does jakubiak fit in, if he has more than 2 games without hurting himself

Bold prediction, but if he's fit, he's the best striker on our books. Not in terms of goals but linking play.

Fully expect someone to bookmark this and laugh at me in 6 months time as he proves to be a complete haddy.
