Quite surprised at that, have seen him twice recently for Stockport and felt he struggled in League 2, the odd flash of skill but easily brushed off the ball.

Surprised he's went backwards or not kicked on - thought he started slow with us but was getting better every game and beginning to look a player just as our season was ended.

Can't be any worse than Andy Dales in the top flight!

Bowyer on McGowan in today's Courier:

"McGowan was out running on Thursday. He had a setback for a couple of weeks but he’s back running again. He went to see a specialist for an update. It’s one of those bone bruising-type things and it’s a case of how long is a piece of string for how long those take. The way Paul plays, a lot of twisting and turning, he just has to let it settle down. We had another look at it to make sure it’s OK. But he’s going the right way.

It’ll be like a new signing having him back.

And it’s been quiet on a match day, put it that way!”

We were supposed to be that stand-out team.

Hmm...

No sure if you're being sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek, but personally I never thought we were anything approaching that level. This is more or less the same squad that finished miles off the pace two seasons ago and was utterly reliant on Charlie Adam single-handedly dragging the team on, so I don't view us as anything like a 'fallen giant' that are really playing well below where we should be. Without Adam we'd have been a mid-table team the last time we were in the Championship, and lo and behold we're in a dogfight with 3 or 4 other teams this time around. I don't think we're underachieving at all, we're right where I expected us to be given the evidence of the past 3-4 seasons.

Neither.

Given how inconsistent we have been all season we're still bookies favourite to go straight back up, and by some way.

Let's see how it pans out come the end of the season.

How much of that is down to folk lumping money on Dundee though, rather than the bookies making a judgement and thinking 'Aye, that squad is gonna batter everyone and run away with that division by 15 points"?, which is kinda what I was getting at when I said there isn't a team in the league of that calibre this season.

I still think, based on the teams in the league at the start of the season, we were the standout team in the eyes of many, and not only the bookies.  I don't recall the concensus on this forum but certainly on another Dee forum the concensus was firmly we were a shoe-in to go up.

I still think we will.

I agree with you that this squad (quality, not quantity) is not as good as we all hoped it would be at this stage of Bowyer’s tenure.  What is different though is we are not being managed by the youth coach.  A coach that had no experience whatsoever of managing an senior team - not at League 2 level, juniors level or even amateur level.  Charlie was more than just a player the season we got promoted.

Truly unbelievable that Nelms would think it was a good idea to give McPake his first chance in management knowing how important it was that we got promoted.  Actually it’s not that surprising, given what had gone before!

TBF to Bowyer, he has came into a club where he has had to work, in the most part, with a squad that's already signed up. He brought in players in places he saw that needed competition and improvement, from research only. He has now worked with the guys for a period of time and now knows the level of football we play at in Scotland compared to England, the more French/Robinson level and not the Grayson level.

I hope he has a season like how his games go. Notice the problems in the first half and correct them and make changes for the 2nd half.

We were and we should be. I remember before the start of the season a vast majority of fans from other teams having us as the ones to go up. That expectation doesn't come from thin air. You can dress it up how you want but we will have the biggest budget in the league and a pool of players that should be at the top end of the table; that doesn't mean we didn't need strengthened mind you.

It was the general consensus also that this league was the 'weakest' it had been for seasons given there was no hearts, hibs, united, ross county etc etc..

Like you, I still think we will end up at the top though. In this case the expectation as much as the hope kills you.

If it ever gets a bit tense just mention you’re going to Barcelona for a weekend break.  That will keep them droning on for hours at a time.

Got a post-it with 'Shed rule' written on it. Stuck on my DFC mousemat
