The Arbroath Thread

Going back these last 4 years, what has been especially sweet is the unprecedented thumpings of near neighbours on their own grounds (we’ve managed 5 against Brechin today but recently Forfar, Montrose, East Fife). Makes up a bit for some poor records against these sides over the past decade or three

AND NUMBER ONE IS DAVID GOLD

Gold along with everyone else was superb yesterday, I must admit I didn't think DC would keep club captain Whatley on the bench when he got back to fitness but he has and he's going to have a job to get back in the starting eleven with Gold playing like he is.

Michael McKenna must be one of DCs best signings. So many of the other ones have been clear as day standout signings on paper... (Swankie/DD/ToB/Wallace/Thomson etc) they were all star players at their own teams and guys that could have had their pick of clubs at this level.

Even from the first season, Doris/Hamilton both cracking players on paper and guys that had an affinity with us, McCord widely raved about too and was an obvious great signing right away.

But McKenna... sort of came out of nowhere, he was a player DC went out his way to get with the club paying money for him in January.

He was unfancied by a lot of fans to start with and was coming in to a squad where McCord and Swankie seemed to have that role sewn up. Wasn't a clear obvious signing. But he's been absolutely brilliant, DC knowing that him and Wallace would work well together too is a great shout and something nobody really saw coming.

Wallace has created a countless amount of chances for him and McKenna set him up lovely for that goal at the weekend too. Him and Wallace set the tempo from the very front and a lot of our goals have been quick turnaround ones where we've forced a defender into a mistake or a tough pass and then they've either made a mess of it or we've closed down the boy the pass was intended for and broke on them.

2nd goal on Saturday, from their goalkeeper taking a free kick, 4 touches by 3 of our players and it's a goal. Hammy winning it then us winning 2nd ball..

3rd goal a press on Tapping by Swankie, poor ball, Little header then McKenna with a great finish..

4th goal DD closing down the forward pass stealing the ball, 5 touches later it's in the net and the 5th goal is the best example...

4-0 up and cruising 10 minutes left Bobby Linn chasing down their left back from the keepers throw winning it back Thomson gets it bombs forward finds himself in the box and finishes.

We just keep going and pressing and winning it in good positions and McKenna (Wallace too but more noticeable with McKenna) sets that tempo right from the front.

Also versatile and can see him moving back into midfield from time to time then a 3 way battle for the positions up top when Doris returns to fitness. Good problems to have but DC seems to be the master of getting everyone their game time and keeping them happy, with the exception of poor Finn Graham (who is obviously also a good player going by his record) who can't seem to break in at all just now.

Completely agree. Although apparently up front is not his natural position from what I’ve seen its by far his most effective.

January will be interesting. Does dick risk a further spell without defensive cover? And will the likes of mccord and graham leave with their lack of game time?

Agree with the above - it's very hard to see Stevie Doris getting back into our starting 11 in the short term, with both our strikers on such good form. With Waldo being our number 1 striker, it's a safe bet that Doris will replace McKenna at some point, I'd expect after we go on a bad run, but it would/ will be very, very harsh on McKenna. Would expect him to potentially move out wide in that scenario depending on who out of our front 4/5 is struggling at that point in time.

We've got 3 superb options up top, with McKenna and Wallace doing the business every week, and Doris tormenting defenders when he comes on for the last half an hour. Out of the 3 of them, I'd definitely say Doris is the best bench player to come on but it's going to become increasingly harsher on him not getting a start with him doing a job every single appearance he's made off the bench since his injury.

Standing beside the dugout second half on Saturday, it was interesting to note that Pink was constantly encouraging our forwards to press and close down the defenders as quick as possible, which we did very well on Saturday and have been doing well for weeks. It was also great to see the amount of encouragement coming from the bench towards the players, with the subs giving support/ encouragement almost constantly.

Think McCord is just happy to be there playing a part. If Swankie picks up an injury or whatever imagine he's the direct replacement. Graham seems to be off to Oz in January.

McKennas goal is fantastic, brilliant run and strike.

Would expect Graham to move on, he’s had a couple of opportunities but not quite delivered. Elgin and Edinburgh City In cup spring to mind. Think we’ll bring in two new players in January, although they’ll have to be good to get into This side

Will there be changes for Cup or do you stick with the winning team??

Mots a tough one as you would like to rest some boys and avoid injuries and there are boys who will be desperate for a game, However all the changes massively back fired the last time, got a good chance to make it into next round,

Would definitely keep the same team and keep the momentum going; 4th round of the cup could be worth a lot of money to us. Saying that, if it's a draw going in to the last 5 minutes I propose we go all out ice hockey style and stick Darren Jamieson up top and go 2-3-6, all or nothing. Would rather that than risk a third away trip down to Stranraer in the one season.

Agree with everything in this post. Definitely keep the same team, no point in chopping and changing when we are playing so well.
