The Arbroath Thread

5 years is mental for a 31 year old IMO. He’s a good player but surely he’s past the point that he’d get nabbed off teams further up the chain. Surely something like 3 years would of been better

The length of contract is immaterial really. What does it matter if it’s 3 or 5 years… or 20 years for that matter? Either he stays fit and keeps playing to a high level and sees out the contract (not unusual for a defender to play until mid 30s) or he retires if he feels like it’s time. Makes no odds really, this is just a way of showing his commitment to the club, and vice versa, and that he wants to finish his career here. Great news imo.

Surely a third option here where he wants to keep playing until his mid 30s but isn't at the level that Arbroath need? Don't get me wrong he is a good player but still seems an odd decision.

Well, then he would just be released from his contract in that instance, if it was mutually beneficial. A contract isn’t a jail sentence and it won’t be financially driven.

Great deal for me. 36 is not old for a centre half.

That entirely depends on the individual player though. Some are still able to maintain a high standard at 38, some are done by 33.

Point being, you can have a reasonable idea what level of player a 26 year old will be when they're 31, and even then you don't see five year deals being handed out at this level. You have no idea what you're getting from a 31 year old when he's 36, it's a considerably riskier move.

Haha , amazing that anyone could put a negative spin on this. He’s still the best part time player in the country imo and Can’t seem him regressing much. Great to tie him down given how poor a season we’ve had. Great loyalty from Tam also.
