Either he stays fit and keeps playing to a high level and sees out the contract (not unusual for a defender to play until mid 30s) or he retires if he feels like it’s time. Makes no odds really, this is just a way of showing his commitment to the club, and vice versa, and that he wants to finish his career here. Surely a third option here where he wants to keep playing until his mid 30s but isn't at the level that Arbroath need? Some are still able to maintain a high standard at 38, some are done by 33. Point being, you can have a reasonable idea what level of player a 26 year old will be when they're 31, and even then you don't see five year deals being handed out at this level. He’s still the best part time player in the country imo and Can’t seem him regressing much. Great to tie him down given how poor a season we’ve had.
