I don't think you can approach games with fear of injury, it's just part of the game - play the strongest lineup available and try to win every game, no matter who you're playing. It's also still very early in the season and every minute of game time is crucial as far as fitness and match sharpness goes.
IMO we should have started with our strongest team today, built a lead then swapped out for the fringe players if/when we'd reached that point.
What did today's approach achieve apart from a confidence knocking defeat against a bunch of teenagers.... and definitive proof that we are f*cking hopeless at penalties? A nice comfortable win would have set us up perfectly for next week, and would have kept the good run and feel-good factor going.

I totally disagree agree with this. It's a worthless cup played against an opposition that's only there to try and get the Old firm B teams into the league. We need players match fit for when we get injuries/suspensions etc and if your not going to play them in a game like this that means nothing when will they get a game? This competition got the respect is deserved which is nothing.

Yeah, on reflection you and Simon are right. For this particular competition it was probably the correct approach, just don’t like to see us lose, particularly to teams that we should be beating comfortably.

Totally understand the frustration - none of us like losing, I think the vast vast majority of us fucking hate this B team nonsense and to lose to one of them in a competitive game, regardless of the circumstances, is shit and slightly embarrassing.

However, there are plenty of players who if they didn't get game time yesterday, they pretty much never would. We had to get JT some game time, Chris Hamilton has missed the past few games and good to get him 90 minutes, Dylan Paterson again showed a lot of promise and did what he could to take the opportunity to impress and if Dowds had to be given a start yesterday to give him a proper look and get some fitness into him. It's also probably fair to give Antell game time as when else will he ever play for us? That's 5 out of the 8 changes there.

Regardless - the cup is over, I don't think any of us were hugely fussed for a run in this one, and in our main priority this year we've started superbly :)

What we learnt from yesterday is that Arbroath need to keep working on penalty kicks.

The players will also be embarrassed about losing to an Aberdeen youth team.

It's also worth noting that all clubs receive prize money for the Challenge Cup - it's not a worthless tournament.

The winners get around 20K, the runners up club get approx 14K and the quarter finalists get about 10k ( the exact funding amount can be found online if anyone wants to follow this up).

While you're not wrong, alternatively look at yesterdays game....

Say 500ish paying punters = 2.5k income. 40% (ish, IIRC it's 37.5%) of that given to away team = 1k to us.

How much were our expenses for the day - travel costs, usual matchday bits and pieces and appearance fees? Obviously I've no idea, but if we broke even it wouldn't be a bad day financially I expect...

Imagine we'd been playing Brora away at Dudgeon Park yesterday instead of playing in Aberdeen..... those expenses would be heavily increased, and that 1k down to 500 quid or whatever. A guaranteed loss of several thousand for the priviledge.

Dick had the right approach yesterday. All the fringe players got a decent chance. What we learned was that there is decent back up in defence and midfield but little in attack. The exception was Paterson who is a great wee player and bound to be an Arbroath favourite on this showing.

Talk to us about Michael Ruth.

Season long loan now confirmed. Was with you guys last season and played against you on Saturday?

Didn’t play much for us on loan but when he did he seemed to play out wide.

He came to us highly rated. We initially played him through the middle. He looked tricky and lively but never quite got amongst the goals. Dick moved him wide and again he showed promise but not enough to displace any of our regulars. He looked sharp on Saturday when he scored against us!

Has some good raw attributes, pacy as you would imagine being a young forward, chances were limited and ultimately probably not quite good enough for the Championship, may do ok in League 1

Maybe thats why , no idea why we give our own players such a hard time.

This was partly in jest replying to lichtie23’s identical comment on Anton Dowds. However there’s a bit of “lies, damn lies and statistics” here. Luke has 3 cup goals against East Fife, Elgin and Kelty Hearts - nothing in the Championship. Last season he had 1 cup goal and no league goals. The season before he had 5 league goals. Not much of a return for a striker. And yes, he is a striker for us.
