The Arbroath Thread

Looking back at Saturdays performance it really was absolutely top drawer. We set up to frustrate them and it worked a treat. The midfield bullied them and certainly left there mark looking at the picture I seen of Declan Glass’s eye. TOB and Ricky kept the most dangerous striker in the league quiet throughout, and even when he did get a sniff Gaston made a superb save. Iv criticised Derek for his weakness under the high ball but on Saturday he looked dominant and I don’t think he was caught under anything all day.
So in conclusion a massive well done to Dick and Pink for setting us up to beat the runaway league leaders. Enjoy this week lads,

Was really happy for Little and Whatley on Saturday, those two (and Bobby) started Dick’s first game in charge when we were not that far away from a playoff to get relegated into the Highland League. What a journey from that day!

Tob’s performance was next level though, especially in the second half. Absolutely magnificent. Miko not too far behind either.

Now we’ve crossed the 30 point mark, how many do we still need to remain outside the bottom two places - which is the management’s stated goal? Four wins from the last 13 - no easy task- should be enough, maybe more than though the Championship is usually fairly competitive so the lowest can manage a fair number. Having a welcome cushion, almost as good would be denying points to the other bottom 5 clubs (ie no defeats). Let’s see.

The transfer window ushered in more dramatic, and welcome changes than most fans could have hoped. As well as strengthening the squad in key areas, it’s clearly given us a morale booster. But have these been affordable? Shareholders won’t see the AFC accounts till much later in the year. Continuing in the Championship is probably more lucrative than relegation and the Board has demonstrated drive in generating more income from various sources. But basically are these moves a considered investment or a bit of a punt?

There is a spreadsheet on the relegation battle thread been done by somebody else and over 40 points you're likely to stay up and 43 or over there's an extremely high probability.

I'm not sure why the signings would not be affordable. We let two players go to bring in Hilson. Wighton will be getting a good chunk of his wages paid but he's only here 6 months. Craigen similar I'm guessing. Chalmers won't be on much at all.

Wilson, Spence, Campbell, Stirling and Doris all left.

As for the 'the championship is probably more lucrative than relegation comment'.... of course it is.

Our average attendance is around 1600 this year and the club tweeted a couple of weeks ago that we'd had over 1000 in hospitality this season.

As for prize money we got £125k for winning the league last season and £85k for finishing 4th in L1 the season before.

Bottom place prize money in this division is £175k. 9th place is £188k. 8th place is £200k. 7th place is £213k. 6th is £225k and 5th where we are currently sitting is £250k. Double the amount of what we got for winning last years league.

Staying in this division would really be huge.

Still a long way to go though but a couple of decent looking home fixtures coming up.

Going by last years prize money figures we earned £125k for winning League 1.

If we finished bottom in the Championship we would earn £175k.

If the league finished right now we would earn £250k.

Think the club is doing what it needs to do in order to stay in this league. The finances being made (prize money, gate reciepts, corporate, etc) make it more attainable than trying to spend out way up the leagues like other clubs have done in the past.

Pink reckoned 42 points would be enough but with the way this league is it might need more. 40 is usually the safety number though.

In the 14 seasons since the playoffs started, 39 points has been sufficient to avoid automatic relegation in all but one season (depending on goal difference).

The 41 point mark has been sufficient to avoid the relegation playoff in all but one of those seasons.

Think it’ll be higher than that this season though... maybe 43 or even 44 to be sure of 8th place.

So we should be targeting 4 more wins from last 13... or 3 wins, 3 draws etc.

I now fancy us to score goals.

I know Bobby hasn't been playing and we've won the last 2 but I'd really love to see him get a chance in the team along with Wighton and Hilson.

He's been our main man and won so many games for us, carried us a bit in an attacking sense.

Him in the team along with 2 other guys who can make things happen going forward would be really good to see in my opinion.

Looking forward to the remaining games regardless I feel we've got plenty options now, aside from at the back, but this is something we've coped with for nearly 4 years now.
