The Arbroath Thread

Well, that long-expected dip has finally arrived. With a few exceptions, the second half of the season we’ve been fairly average or worse (as the form tables would suggest). Leaking a few goals while finding it a huge struggle to score from open play. Dick Campbell’s interviews hint at both a bit of complacency from the players together with reluctance to compete in difficult weather conditions. Plus we always seem a bit vulnerable at home

Not much difference between any of the teams in this league so every game is extremely tough especially at this sharp end of the season. But we can see this through with a good measure of reapplication to the task. Each game, each phase of each game needs us to compete across the park. We need to up the intensity yet also be patient. And not look beyond each game, or each phase. We have good players and management so a reset to the basics should garner enough results.

Does anyone know why we signed Donnelly? Does he have some incriminating material that he is using to blackmail DC.

The boy is a donkey who cant run, Cant head and looks like he is scared of the ball.

If we have signed him so that he can lead the line then we have a huge problem as he looks bereft of ability to perform higher than pub football.

There must have been something in him that DC liked but we ain't seen it yet, don't think he was bought to lead the line but honestly fail to see what he brings to the team. Like Simon says needs to be dropped for his own good just now but hopefully in the future we will see something better from him.

Every team who set themselves up with a big lead seem to go through a bad spell when getting near the business end and we seem to be no different. Remember Morton a few years back. We were at our best when Wallace and McKenna were paired up top and maybe time to go back to them and see if that recaptures our form. If we had scored early on or Linn put the penalty away it might have been a different outcome but when teams set up with 4 and 5 across the back and play to win a point we have struggled to beat them. Would expect East Fife to try the same tactics and patience might be the key.

From a Rovers point of view, it's absolutely sickening as you guys are showing exactly the type of form we needed you to after we won at Gayfield. Just so happens we have been even worse

Looks like Barry Smith broke Spence last season.

I’m guessing Dick sees him as a longer term Swankie replacement.

McKenna and Wallace haven't played together since Montrose away on the 29th December. Before that it had been changed too, Doris and Wallace played against Raith the week before. Doris and McKenna had started against Stenhousemuir in the 5-2 too. The last time McKenna and Wallace played together was the Scottish cup tie where we battered Stranraer and ended up losing 1-0.

Essentially in the league the last time we had them as a regular pairing was the Brechin away game.

Since the Brechin game at the end of November our strikers have scored 3 goals, Wallace 2 against Stenny and Donnelly 1 against East Fife.

League Results since Brechin (where McKenna and Wallace both scored)

Arbroath 5-2 Stenhousemuir - Linn x 2, Omar, Hammy, McCord

Forfar 2-3 Arbroath - Bobby Linn x 3

Airdrie 0-1 Arbroath - Ricky Little

Arbroath 0-2 Raith

Montrose 1-1 Arbroath - ToB

Arbroath 1-0 Brechin - McCord

Stenhousemuir 1-4 Arbroath - Wallace with his 2 in this game, Linn x 2

Arbroath 0-2 Forfar

Arbroath 1-1 Stranraer - Linn

Raith 0-1 Arbroath - Hamilton

Arbroath 3-2 Airdrie - Linn x 3

East Fife 1-1 Arbroath - Donnelly with his goal

Dumbarton 2-0 Arbroath

Arbroath 0-2 Stenhousemuir

I said somewhere else that I felt like reinforcements up top were a good idea, because McKenna and Wallace might get injured or drop off in form. But the partnership has been completely bombed out for ages now when it did work so well. It done my nut in at the time when Wallace was getting such a hard time and it's even more frustrating now looking back.

Can't be many other teams in the league who's strikers have scored less than a combined 3 goals in the last 15 games. Going forward Bobby Linn has been a machine and kept us winning games, with a little bit of help from the rest of the team chipping in.

I won’t be popular in suggesting this but maybe be we should go to one up front to try to grind out some results. The opposition seem to have us figured out at the moment. We’ve looked wide open to counter attacks in recent games and Jamieson has saved us several times.

Wouldn't be against it would just mean McKenna coming in and dropping back a bit deeper. Would need to play DD and Linn out wide and either Doris or Wallace uptop though.

Should just pick 11 boys from the crowd then I'm sure they'll all have massive commitment and desire to win. Play the fans DC
