Casual Bystander
Highly debatable of course, but there is no questioning that while we are part of the UK we continue to be seen as a target. However we've seen modern and successful European countries see a different route than an interventionist foreign policy and have avoided such attacks. What about NATO I hear the nodrones shout, well countries like Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Switzerland are not part of NATO yet co-operate with countries that are. With the threat level being raised to severe (one step away from it's highest rating) there are some who feel we pay too high a price for what has been seen as a hypocritical and overly militaristic interventionist foreign policy. Mr Bairn
I don't think the men in suits at Al Qaeda's head office are going to change their targets based on this referendum. They will continue to look for any excuse to attack this island.

What can't be denied is that while we are part of the UK the chances of terrorist attacks does not diminish.
Mr Bairn
If this could be guaranteed then it would be one of the best reasons to vote Yes. Problem is that I don't trust Scotland to make Islamic extremism a priority.

So you think that a country which has a good record of integrating other ethnicities would have a poorer record of dialogue than the UK which is currently in an immigration hate meltdown? Well, you are entitled to your opinion.

welshbairn
List of terrorist attacks in Scotland whilst being part of the UK, 1970 till present: 1. 1979, 17 February: The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) bombed two pubs frequented by Catholics in Glasgow, Scotland. Both pubs were wrecked and a number of people were wounded. It said it bombed the pubs because they were used for Irish republican fundraising. 2. 2007 30 June: 2007 Glasgow International Airport attack perpetrated by Islamist extremists. 3. err, that's it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents_in_Great_Britain

Casual Bystander
Such a shame Mr Bairn, you started off this thread with a fairly even response. Now you are trying to claim street/gang violence is terrorism because it was undertaken by someone of a different religion to you.

Mr Bairn
Surely killing a man in the name of Allah in a horrific manner in order to spread fear among believers in EXACTLY what Islamic terrorism is about?
Mr Bairn
Christ reading more about that case makes it sound even worse. Donald wasn't even part of thee hire gang that provoked Shahid and his accomplices at a nightclub, they murdered him BECAUSE he was white. If that isn't terrorism I don't know what is. BerwickMad
So you think that a country which has a good record of integrating other ethnicities would have a poorer record of dialogue than the UK which is currently in an immigration hate meltdown? Well, you are entitled to your opinion. Scotland has a far smaller percentage of people from other ethnicities than England to be fair. It's hard to predict how easy it would be for Scotland to integrate other ethnicities if it was on the same level as in England.
