UKIP MEP in racism "shocker"

Recommended Posts

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned on here already, and perhaps it has but I didn't see a thread for it. This is the BBC report:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKxdLX7EKFg

"Shocker" is in quotes purely because it's not a shock in the slightest, simply another in a long line of racist, sexist and xenophobic comments attributed to UKIP representatives.

For those who don't want to watch all that, and haven't seen the reports until now, the MEP just minutes after speaking to someone with a Thai wife she calls her a "ting tong from somewhere".

Janice Atkinson is essentially the second most prominent politician for UKIP in the SE of England with only Farage higher than her in the EU PR list. Not only that she is an ex-press officer for guess who? Yes, the Conservatives.

Let's just remind us that 28% of those who voted in England in the EU elections voted for UKIP.

Nothing new. UKIP are really a cuddly version of the BNP. BNP for the middle classes.

One very good reason for voting YES is how Britain is going and the way society is going. We need to be able to shape our own inclusive society.

Interestingly just 24 hours before her comments, she was quoted in a local Kent paper as saying she wanted to "debunk racism myths" about UKIP. Well it's fair to say she debunked the myth that UKIP is racist by providing definitive evidence of it's existence.

In the same article, and to show you just how unhinged from reality the woman is, she claimed that the EU was at fault for Somali pirates. The quote being, "And the only reason we’ve got Somali pirates is because the EU has raped the sea around there. They’re desperate." This was as she called for the Navy to be mobilised in the English Channel to stop Eastern Europeans crossing it in dingies. As it is UK Border force has yet to comment on the number of Eastern Europeans in dingies who have tried to circumvent passport control, perhaps due to the numbers being so large it's difficult to count or perhaps simply because it hasn't happened.

UKIP got a very healthy vote in the Euro elections because our membership of the EU is (in my opinion rightly) unpopular. Given Labour's support for Europe and the Conservative's mixed message, it's not surprising (but very unfortunate) that those wanting to register their opposition to Europe voted for UKIP in such large numbers.

I don't think there is any real excuse for ignorance of the facts. People knew before the election that UKIP were racist, sexist and xenophobic and still voted for them. Essentially those 30 odd percent are either racists or condone racism.

Any electoral process in a representative democracy is flawed. Many, but not all, who want to voice their opposition to Europe chose to vote UKIP despite, rather than because of, the traits you mention.

I'm not condoning it but I can understand why people do it. It would be a massive oversimplification to paint those people as racists, sexists or xenophobes; or fellow travellers.

I agree it is an over simplification, however for someone to support a racist party at the polls suggests that they considering the racism less of an issue than the ones the party are promoting, and thus they are condoning that racism. It might not be implicit, but it's certainly the case.

Not that I wish to go down the road of Godwin's Law, but it is a bit like supporting the German National Socialists in the 1930's because you support the development of a good road infrastructure.

A lot of people are fed up with the EU and UKIP are the only party that actively want to leave. It's no surprise they did well.

UKIP do seem completely unable to weed out the lunatics when picking candidates, though. Luckily for them, most people don't care about European elections so things like this will likely barely register.

I'm with the Somali pirates on this one.

Her quote is brilliant. It's on the Sarah Palin, "I can see Russia from my window", scale of geographical ignorance considering the closest country in the EU to Somalia is Greece which is round about 3000 miles away.

Makes you wonder how she can find her way to the European Parliament with such a poor grasp of geography. Interestingly she did, and has voted on several motions (*snigger*) although perhaps not the ones you would expect. For example she has repeatedly voted No on motions calling for more dialogue in the Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Palestine conflicts, but voted Yes on Lithuania adopting the Euro. Make of that what you will.

Shameful behaviour.

Wouldn't get racism in the Essenpee.

I looked forward to seeing strong action being taken here.

The party's line on this is clear, racism is unacceptable.

What happened? An apology was issued and, erm, that's it. Same as the ukip punter.

The relevant legislatioon via the 1976 race relations act defines race ethnic or national origin as being defining characteristics for this purpose, so yep it's the same.

Swing and a miss.

Except they're not my beloved UKIP, economic simpletons mixed with closet racists, no thanks.

Feel free to reply to the substance of my post.
