Kevin Thomson not happy...

Some dafty claims Collins couldn't lace Thomsons boots. Haha.

Following on the discussions of the last two pages, I see no contradiction in thinking John Collins is a total dick and also thinking he's entirely in the right over every fall out he ever had with Kevin Thomson.

We absolutely should expect more from footballers in terms of fitness and nutrition etc. It directly impacts their job and it really should be part of their job.

An office worker can be overweight or even obese and they can still do their job fine. That obviously isn't the case for footballers.

Fitness has come on massively since the days of Cruyff et al. Their fantastic talent got them far, but they could have got even further if they took their fitness further. Of the three only Ardilles played more than 10 years and was pretty much done by 33. He played on after that but never more than a few games a season.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world today, and many argue he's the best. A large part of that is how hard he works at his fitness. He's 35 and still going strong and has played more games than any of the previously mentioned players (although I acknowledge that injury did Cruyff in).

Not signing for Dumbarton when he had the chance is what finished Cruyff off.

I've no reason to believe that footballers are any different from any other group of employees.  You'll have some who are prepared to go the whole hog, treat their body as a temple and practice beyond what is expected of them.  Then there are the journeymen for whom it's just another job.

In my line of work, there are programmers who study all the hours, pay for their own training courses and stay on top of all the industry developments.  Then you have the majority who come in at 9, do their best until 5 then go home and switch off.

Which category do you fall into?

As a youngster, group 1.  Nowadays...

I was never in group 1. Probably partly explains my low earning capability in my working life. But I had enough to do me.

I'm not saying every footballer should smoke 40 a day and have a pizza for dinner 3 times a week.  Most of them keep themselves in good shape and fitness compared to their age group peers.

What I'm suggesting is that we shouldn't be expecting every club player to exhibit Ronaldo's levels of commitment.  As a group, I wouldn't expect footballers to be any more driven than a similar group from another profession.

I take the point but not sure professional footballers fall into exactly the same category as a mundane office job.

Unless you are supremely talented I don't think you can get to first team level in say the Premiership without having a degree of drive & work ethic as a youngster. Maybe what's lacking is the drive for continued improvement.

Kris Boyd syndrome. Playing for rangers should have been his dream, not the ambition.

To what extent is it true that most young Scottish players have no ambition beyond signing (if not necessarily actually getting a game) for one of the Bigot Twins?

A pet peeve of mine is how many players are open about the fact they support one of the OF whilst playing for another Scottish team. Darren O'Dea used to piss me right off retweeting things about Celtic on the daily when he was our captain on the Saturday, Alex Rae acting as a pundit for Rangers TV whilst our manager, Bomber doesn't need mentioned and finally, players going to a Celtic European game taking a picture and putting #Paradise.

Might seem petty but I view it as disrespectful, but more than that, what chance do you have of challenging them on the park when half your team has put the opposition on a pedestal and is openly idolising them?

I'm wary about replying to this, was this the title of your dissertation?

There’s nothing winds me up more than when a team is about to play Rangers or Celtic and a tabloid has a 2 page spread about how one of their players is a massive fan of the team they’re about to play. It normally happens when they play a lower league side in the cup, but it’s not unheard of for it to happen before an SPL game either. Imagine the reaction if, prior to a Rangers vs Aberdeen match they had a Rangers player posing with a Dons scarf talking about how he’s always dreamt of running out at Pittodrie and theirs is always the first score he checks on a Saturday?

Not entirely the same, but it got me thinking about when Davie Robertson, by then a fixture in the Rangers starting line-up, rather naively showed his face in the Dons end in a Glasgow semi-final in the 1990s and had to be escorted out by five-oh for his own safety.

The John Brown era was summed up in a midweek friendly against Rangers at Dens. Nacho Novo was sitting in the Main Stand where all the other ex-players etc were sitting. He then demanded (And received) a steward escort round the side of the pitch mid-game so that he could sit with the Rangers fans.

Rat.
