Yep, in 1967.  Celtic won the big cup, Rangers unlucky in the final of the CWC, Kilmarnock lost a Fairs Cup semi final to Leeds United, and Dunfermline were eliminated on away goals by eventual winners Dinamo Zagreb in the 2nd round.

 

ETA - Oh, and Dundee United cuffed their perpetual bunnies Barcelona home and away as usual - before beating fucking Juventus at Tannadice, but unfortunately by too small a margin to get past them.  What a season eh?

I'm not making this about Celtic or rangers it's about Scotland. Bobby Lennox played for 20 years he only got 10 caps his last cap was in 1970 yet he played for Celtic until 78.

 

 

 

If not selecting Lennox was a mistake it was a sufficiently minor one that Scotland somehow got away with it

 

Scotland failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1970

 

That wouldn’t happen again till 1994 when Lennox was in his 50s

It was relevant from the program on Monday so it was not trolling.
It has took four days to get a sensible post the star that is @Estragon well done.

Implying, not quite the word I would use. Although it is interesting looking back over that period & seeing how few caps some players did get. Would have 100+ caps if they were around over the last 20 years.

Ronnie Simpson started his goalkeeping career with Queens Park at the age of 14...he played nearly 300 games with Newcastle United, twice winning the FA Cup...he also played for Hibernian...he won his first International Cap at the age of 36 when he was with Celtic.

Lennox & Chalmers were competing with genuinely top class players like Denis Law, Alan Gilzean and Ian St John for the Scottish International Team...though it's always worth remembering that Law & St John together with Billy McNeill and the Double-winning Spurs Legend Dave McKay were team-mates in a Scotland team that played England at Wembley - as a prime example of institutional bias the  Goalkeeper took the blame for the defeat and never played for Scotland again...he was Frank Haffey of Celtic...it was the infamous 9-3 defeat.

I don't think you were trolling at all.  It was a valid discussion point arising from the programme.

BUT insisting that a group of players from one club should have gained more caps despite input from posters outwith the Glasgow fishbowl who showed the range of talent available to Scotland and how top players both in Scotland and England were overlooked/partly ignore does show that you're struggling with the meaning of 'parochial'.

Notice a lot of comments saying there were a lot less international games back then. Looks to me like there were roughly the same amount of international games. A quick Google check shows 75 Scotland games from 65 - 74 (9 in a row period) and from 2009 - 2018, most recent completed 9 year period there were 83 Scotland games. 8 extra games over 9 years doesn't seem to suggest a lot less internationals back then. Am I missing something obvious?

The low amount of caps does seem strange given Celtic won 9 league titles and numerous cups in one of the best leagues in europe and made 2 finals, 2 semi finals and 2 QFs in the EC. The quality available at that time must've been unreal. Its interesting reading different viewpoints on the matter, I had always assumed bias as the reason but then that's what I was told growing up.

Two slight corrections.  1. Rangers had two - Greig and McKinnon.  Baxter was at Sunderland at the time.  2. Greig and McKinnon weren't CH partners.  McKinnon was CH and Greig and Baxter both played wing half.

I could never understand those old fangled positions, agolopise for the Baxter faux pas. I stand by everything else, we used to have so many great footballers that were eligible for International Selection, sad times.
