Montrose 0-3 Peterhead

Recommended Posts

Oh dear.

Montrose were comically bad today, being three goals down after barely a quarter of the game had gone. All three goals were slick and well worked Peterhead moves that made Montrose look slow, unfit and not at the races at all.

Peterhead were sharp, well organised and highly motivated, and look like they may well be good enough to have a tilt at the play offs in League One this season. Their passing was crisp and their finishing slick, and they set high standards for themselves (the goalkeeper and the centre half chuntering at one another for miscommunication, with two minutes left of a long dead game, tells that story). That said, they won;t have an easier game all season and didn't ever need to get out of third gear to win.

The red cards will be very damaging in a small squad. In the first half, a straight red for Webster was harsh; no real arguments with Wood being the last man for the second. At that point it really looked like a comprehensive humiliation was on the cards. The only crumb of comfort in a truly abysmal showing was some fine saves from McKenzie in goal, and keeping the score down when it could have been much worse.

Peterhead seemed to take pity on us. Bar a couple of sclaffy half chances early on, Smith in the Peterhead goal had nothing whatever to do all afternoon.

Montrose looked undercooked, were tactically a shambles, and the new midfield signings were crushed by Peterhead's much more experienced set up like a tank going over a speed bump.

Most worrying of all was the apathy surrounding the game and a wretched performance like that will hardly encourage the stay-aways to take an interest. A bad afternoon all round.

Poor performance 1st half. 3 well worked goals for Peterhead. Deserved red cards for Webster and Wood. Defensively poor again and worry is that Wood was again moved to defence after reshuffle following Webster red card. Same problem as last season. Why wasn't Colin Wilson on bench?? Shape of team in 1st half was awful, allowing Peterhead time . on the flanks to create chances. Worry about game against Falkirk next week. Need to get shape, lineup sorted by 1st league game.
