DAFC
Last year united went backwards and other teams spent big. Same has happened this year so far. Take vidic, Ferdinand and Evra out of the defence and replace them with players not good enough and it's going to be a disaster. You can't take much from these friendlies. Perhaps the manager can turn them into winners but the basic talent just isn't there IMHO.
Rab B Nesbit
Van Gaal was apparently giving the captaincy to a player scheduled to play the full 90 minutes of a game rather than testing their leadership qualities. It's Rooney tonight against Liverpool despite Fletcher also starting.
meanmistermustard
Biggest concern for Man U is their defence which is dire after the loss of Vidic and Ferdinand, neither had any pace last season yet still were better than Jones, Smalling and Evans. Jones again highlighting how unreliable and rash he can be by flying into Sterling long after the ball is gone in tonights friendly against Liverpool. They wont win the league but can see them getting back into the Champions League on the basis they sign a quality central defender. They certainly look better than last seasons embarrassment under Moyes.

They've been a shambles at the back at times in that first half. Certainly like giving Steven Gerrard a free go from 12 yards.
meanmistermustard
Yip. Play like that in the Premier League and they will get humped by quite a few clubs. All over the place at times and giving the ball away so cheaply. Van Gaal will make sure they get someone else in as these three as a back-line will be a disaster. Rab B Nesbit
Must have been a riveting game I take it? Finishes 3-1 to Man U, with Man U having 3 shots on target to Liverpool's 1, a penalty at that Would rather the result had been the other way round but one of the most competitive friendly I've seen at that level. Hopefully prove to be very good preparation for the real stuff.
7-2
It's Rooney tonight against Liverpool despite Fletcher also starting. Manchester United @ManUtd 7h Van Gaal on captaincy: "I'm always looking for opportunities to give players the armband. Rooney was captain because he played for 90 mins." Just continuing the policy he stated previously. Fletcher went off at half time. It was interesting that both Fletcher and Rooney jointly received the trophy though. 7-2
The young lad Blackett looked the most composed at the back for United when he came on. There's no way they can play 3-5-2 with the players they have so van Gaal must surely be bringing in a couple of new defenders given that's the system he's going with. He did make a difference on the ball at the back. Pleased for young Jesse coming on and scoring late on - in a previous life used to teach him as a baby faced first year. He was with Man Utd even then. Hopefully Van Gaal will give him a go.
leomessi1984
Jesse Lingard looks to have plenty of potential and looked decent in the championship. Hopefully he can step up to the next level this season! Still think we will see Vermaelen and one other signed to do a job at the back for the coming season. Ferdinand too. Another box ticked.
The Grass Is Greener.
How on earth has Neville got a gig on MOTD, I thought he was terrible over the World Cup.

djchapsticks
Imagine my surprise when I head Man Utd managed to recoup around £3m plus a 50% sell on for Bebe. Impressive that they actually got anything back on him!
callum-ayr
If Vermaelen signs, I don't think the starting 11 is looking too bad. De Gea Smalling Jones Vermaelen Valencia Shaw Fletcher Mata Herrera Rooney RVP You'll probably see Mata further forward than the 2 sitting midfielders playing in the hole behind the 2 strikers.
