Booker-T
So what games can you think of that have been played in odd circumstances, in strange places or just shouldn't have happened for one reason or another. I'll kick off with the 1980 Copa Del Rey Final pretty clear what is so odd about this game from the moment you see the club crests.
LongTimeLurker
I think PSV vs Yong PSV happened in the Dutch cup in recent times as well albeit not the final. Would google the details if I wasn't on my phone but I think Rangers wound up playing Vorwarts Berlin of East Germany in Sweden for some bizarre Cold War related reason in the early 60s. Benjamin_Nevis
The Estonia v Scotland debacle is probably the weirdest I've seen. That, and pretty much any visit to the old Meadowbank Thistle.
HibeeJibee
Off-hand, I can't recall anything I've seen personally, other than extreme-ish weather. Fans present at the final of the Southern Counties Charity Cup in 1936 were watching, ostensibly, Mid Annandale v Queen of the South. Fair enough, you say, but what of it? Well, since 1932 Mid Annandale had been inviting Hamilton Academical to moonlight as them. Quirky, you say, but hardly ground breaking. Only thing was... Queen of the South had to embark for a tour of France the night before the Final. So they arranged for Morton to moonlight as them. So despite being Mid Annandale v Queen of the South, it was actually Hamilton Accies v Morton. For the record, Hamilton Accies Mid Annandale won 3-1. HibeeJibee
When did that practice stop happening? That year. Read more about it all here: http://www.scottishleague.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4286 Charity cups in Scotland often saw "invited" players used, but this was taking it to extremes. tinkerbelle
What was the game a few years back where a player who was on loan from Real Madrid scored a couple of goals against Real Madrid to put them out of the European cup? Fair play to Real for allowing him to play against them as most clubs would not allow it to happen. I think the player involved had a later short lived spell at Liverpool. HibeeJibee
There are some cracking stories from the Second World War in Britain... Hibs v Hearts - Monday 1st January 1940 - SFL East Division Despite very heavy fog restricting visibility to only 10 feet over 14,000 people had paid in, and with it due live on radio they decided to press ahead lest the Germans be alerted to weather conditions over the Forth. BBC radioman Ben Kingsley initially set up a chain of boy runners between pitchside and the commentary box, but eventually abandoned all pretence of actually describing the game and simply invented his commentary with outrageous play. Fact proved stranger than fiction, as the match ended Hibs 5-6 Hearts!! On top of that the referee accidentally blew-up for HT on 43 minutes, and due to the terrible peasouper some spectators did not realise the match was over until 10 minutes after full-time. I've also seen it said that once the teams had gone in for full-time, someone had to go back out and fetch one of the goalkeepers, still diligently defending his line... Brighton & Hove Albion v Southampton - Saturday 12th October 1940 - Football League South During the overlap between the Battle of Britain and the Blitz quite a number of games were affected by Air Raids. That said play often continued with a system of 'spotters' used who would warn people to take cover if an enemy bomber was actually approaching. Only 50 people paid in to this game, and it got abandoned on 5 mins as the sirens went off. As the scoreline was supposed to stand in games affected by fortunes of war, the 0-0 result stood... Hibs v Rangers - Saturday 4th July 1942 at Hampden - Summer Cup Final With no Scottish Cup in play during the war this tournament was the near equivalent but war conditions meant no replay if drawn. Even extra-time failed to seperate the teams with things locked at 0-0. In these days before penalty shoot-outs, the tiebreak was corner kicks. Unfortunately this was also a tie at 2-2. That meant a coin toss. Rangers won courtesy the King's head... Hibs v Hearts - Saturday 8th May 1943 - East of Scotland Shield Final Having got underway ontime but in poor weather the tie got abandoned on 30 minutes with the score at 1-1 "because there were only 300 people in the ground". They tried again the following weekend, and this time in more favourable weather a crowd of almost 7,000 turned out to see Hibs win 3-2 aet... Charlton v ? - October 1943 - Football League South Short of players on matchday, Charlton included Rogers the ex-Arsenal, Newcastle and Chester player as a guest. Unfortunately, as soon as the game had started it became clear that whoever this Rogers was he was not a footballer and could barely play the game. In these days before substitutes they had to complete the 90 mins with him on the park, and the manager apologised to supporters in their next home programme... Stockport County v Doncaster Rovers - Saturday 30th March 1946 - Third Division North War Cup Due to restrictions on midweek football, provision had been made for drawn cupties to be played to a finish. Both sides had drawn 2-2 at Doncaster the week before, and the 2nd leg was also 2-2 at full-time. Extra-time was played and produced no scoring. An extra 15 minutes was played. Then another. And then another. And then yet another. And then another still. During all of this some spectators had actually gone home, had their dinners, and come back to the match. Play was finally abandoned due to bad light at 6:45pm after 203 minutes of continuous play. They tried again back at Doncaster on the midweek immediately following and it finished 4-0 ... They were heady, crazy days for sure.

Carl Cort's Hamstring
A weird one that I was actually at four or five years ago: Ghana 4 - 1 Zambia Brisbane Road, London In a masterclass of incompetence, Zambia had forgotten to organise Visas for their South African based players, who constituted about half the squad, so showed up in London with only 9 players. With the prospect of the game having to be called off, the Zambian FA was reduced to ringing up Zambian students studying in Britain and asking if they fancied a game for the national team. They managed to find three and started two of them, with the third student having to come on after about 10 minutes due to an injury. They eventually managed to take two of them off again just before half time when two of the regular squad members finally rocked up. To be honest, they did well to only lose 4-1. But yeah, pretty odd.

7-2
Nigeria 2 Scotland 2 Before this friendly match that was played in London, there were public warnings of match fixing. Despite the game being under close scrutiny. the Nigerian keeper clearly threw the ball into his own net, although the goal was wrongly disallowed for a foul. Remarkably, despite world wide coverage and a general incredulity about the incident, FIFA have apparently done absolutely nothing about it. Very odd indeed. The Ginger Prince
Helicopter Sunday was a weird one. Obviously we were playing Rangers and with them having the 1-0 lead they needed (and hoping for a cultic f**k up which happened later) and our European place secured the ball was just passed around without either team doing much with it.
