senorsoupe
Including academy products who have made at least 1 first team appearance, Hearts now have 37 players under contract for next year
the jambo-rocker
Considering our squad was perpetually stretched last season and there will be a reserve league AND an u18s league next season, the level of recruitment sounds about right.

Probably 26 total. How many do other teams have using your original calculations?

Nobody else has more than 30
JamieThomas
Sounds about right. We'll punt a dozen out on loan as per.

A) I'm a stats nerd, so I pay attention to this sort of thing and Hearts are a fascinating outlier B) I'm bored as f**k right now Edited June 6, 2018 by senorsoupe

Plus a number of guys who made one appearance last season will not be used unless in an emergency, Connor Smith, Chris Hamilton, Leeroy Makovora etc. Then a good number from Petkov, Keena, Currie, Moore, Morrison, Zanatta, Henderson, Irving will likely be loaned or left in the reserves until ready.
Tony Wonder
Seems we can't win either. Folk moan about us signing players from foreign leagues so when we sign guys from lower league English teams or that are familiar with the Scottish game we still get it tight. C'est la vie.

Folk aren't bothered where the players come from so long as they are half decent for this level. Since 2014 our player turnover has been huge each season and the majority of players have been nowhere good enough. You can win - just sign players who aren't shite like Hibs and Aberdeen currently do and we used to do.

You're right, of course, but I have to say I'm not inspired by many of the signings - I'm always hopeful, obviously - more players to come, I think. 37, 38, 39...

Aberdeen have signed quite a lot of shite the last few years imo, they just sign good players as well which masks it.

They've also finished 2nd for the last 4 years partly because McInnes can pick out good British and Irish footballers and spends his budget wisely. Everybody signs some shite players but that doesn't matter so long as you build the spine of a decent side and build on that each year. We buy 5 - 10 players each season and then clear the decks best we can the following summer. Your point was that we shouldn't grumble about signing lower league English players or players from the Scottish game because we've already complained about signing foreigners. How about the club don't take a punt on unwatched dross with 3 year deals on guys like Oshaniwa, Martin, Kitchen and Amankwaa? Is signing Scottish based players like Mulraney, MacLean and Edwards the answer? I suspect we will know by the end of September but perhaps there is another way for us to be going about our business. It's frustrating because it seemed as though we were moving in the right direction last season compared to the one before. We spent big money wisely on Berra and Lafferty with Milinkovic and Mitchell proving to be good loan deals. We hardly ever sign anyone unproven on a permanent deal worth keeping or pick up the right talented Scottish players with something to prove these days and therein lies the problem. When you are constantly churning over so many players each season you cannot progress.
NJ2
During that time Aberdeen have had one manager, McInnes. We’ve had Locke, Neilson, Cathro and Levein...

When you are constantly churning over so many players each season you cannot progress. I don't disagree with most of that, with the exception of me saying we can't grumble. Hearts fans are entitled to grumble, I was talking about fans of other clubs piling in acting like we were doing anything different from the vast majority of clubs. And Aberdeen have had consistency but a lot of that comes from having a bigger budget. The gambles they do take don't account for as much of their budget as ours do.
