If you smash their goal for 45m and go in at the interval still 0-0 it's often asking for trouble.

To be fair we didn't smash their goal for 45 minutes. That would imply we created a number of good chances, and we didn't.

In fact the our first half performance was very like the first half against Hearts the previous week, when we looked comforably the better side without creating much of note.  The main difference was that the goal we conceded to virtually our opponents first meaningful attack took place just after half-time instead of just before.  And that we put the game out of reach by conceding another one a few minutes later.

But we could hardly fail to dominate possession and territory because Motherwell weren't interested in competing on those terms.  Their game plan was to foul, break up play, and trust that we would make mistakes on the rare occasions they venured into our third.  It worked like clockwork and they deserved their win because, cynical and horrible as they were, they were the only team on the pitch playing like they understood how SPL football works.

I don't see how failing to score from 18 attempts and conceding 2 from 2 attempts will have us right up there.

If this was a one off, I could see your point, but this sort of result seems to have been a recurring theme this season.

The biggest concern for me is opposition teams are tending to score with the few chances they are creating. God forbid what might happen if teams start having 10 or more chances in a game with our defence being so poor.

It's all about the quality of the chances.  Glass/Cormack point to the fact that an outrageously high percentage of our opponents shots on target are going in, and claim this is proof of bad luck.  They would have a point if we were watching spectacular 25 yard rockets going in every week, but we're not.  All our opponents have had to do is convert easy chances.  If the chances you create are long shots and the chances you concede are sitters you can hardly blame luck for your opponents converting more of their chances.

Exactly this

The team is soft throughout

One of the more frustrating seasons in recent times.

Personally I think we've played well in the majority of games. It's our inability to convert our chances and the moments of sheer defensive madness that has determined our place in the league. With the group of players we have we should be up there fighting for third. However this league is all about being well organized and difficult to beat. Thats why Hearts are currently third.

A couple of wins on the bounce and we can catch those above us fighting for European spots.

Hmmmm.

If you mean by 'played well' that we haven't been an utter, raging shambles, then you're correct. But the fact that we've been so consistently awful/brutal/weak/soft as shite in defence can't be ignored.

You're right to say that this league is all about being organised and difficult to beat. We're neither. Until Glass addresses this and gets the defence sorted, we're going to lose games consistently.

This is very much the case in the SPFL Premiership (or whatever ludicrous name Neil Tadcaster gave this league we play in), but you wonder why it has to be.

We turn up to all these fixtures knowing how the opponents are going to play - and time and again it seems good enough to beat us.

If we do draw our opponents out of their defensive shell, they just foul us (and refs invariably let quite a few go before doing much to deter it) - otherwise decent build up play often ends up with an aimless final ball that is easily cleared. Then at the other end, any chances we do give up end up in the back of our net.  This cannot be some strange coincidence.

Maybe for a spell in recent years, we worked out how to win most of these types of matches - but Motherwell and St Johnstone in particular have often proved to be sticky opponents and invariably fairly horrible games of football.

We usually won those games because we played similar football but with better players.

Sunday night quiz time. I was channel-hopping and paused in time to snap this from a 1960s film - I'd never seen it before and hopefully never will again.
In which film does this Joe Harper appear? Very apt that it's "Guess your Weight".

“Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang!”?
