He averaged a goal every ~6 games at Aberdeen. It's not prolific but as a supporting striker being guaranteed 5/6 goals every season is great for this level.

In terms of goals and assists he was involved in a goal every ~2 games for you lot in the league.

Pressure free?

He was returning to the club where he previously scored 20+ goals, was apparently our highest earning player ever, and the manager declared him the striker who'd hit double figures and fire us up the league.

It's absolutely bizarre this idea that playing for St Johnstone is inherently different to Aberdeen, both sides have genuine ambitions of pushing for 3rd/qualifying for Europe, and winning both trophies. Its very "Old Firm" to claim that some clubs "don't care about winning every week", tbh.

Not trying to make any club look diddy, or big time, in reality both clubs are fairly small fry in European/ world club football.
Having a couple of thousand fans in a 10 thousand seater stadium though, fans who recognise they are a small club over achieving, doesn’t put anywhere near as much pressure on a player as a club with 12-15 thousand fans who (at times unrealistically) expect to be challenging for trophies. Pressure coming from the stands is real. It’s referred to at Ibrox regularly and has been mentioned as a help for the Sevco team last season as the stands were empty.

Presume it's this.

That might be a good thing. When players have talked about Joe as captain they usually mention that he's a great example, professional etc. Someone coaching from the middle of the pitch sounds a good idea and brown has been doing that well for years.

😂

Saints have won 3 trophies in the past decade and spent the entire time battling for Europe. The idea our fanbase still sees us as some plucky wee diddy side enjoying our time in the Sun is about 8 years out of date. The expectation now is to challenge for Europe and trophies every season.

Probably, but the reaction of our fanbase in general to that would put to rest this idea our fans just sit applauding for 90 minutes as our brave young laddies play at a level far beyond our wildest dreams.

I dunno. The folk who think the man on the pitch wearing an armband makes a difference will be delighted.

I am in that camp - albeit having 3 or 4 natural leaders is better.

The team were a rudderless bunch at times over the last couple of seasons, and this would seem to be a no-brainer.

He doesn't need a bit of elastic on his arm to tell folk what to do though.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but it's more of an off field position anyway which is why Lewis will still be doing that part of it as Brown is on the coaching staff.

I'd doubt it.

Former United captain Keane has now explained how Maguire should approach his new role.

"It's all about the team. Don't be distracted by it, by the captaincy, enjoy it. You don't need the armband to be a leader but he does seem very proud of it,"  Keane told Sky Sports ahead of the clash against Liverpool.

That's coming from the man thought of as one of the best captains British football has ever seen.

We were a better unit with Shinnie as captain. Hartley made a difference
The wee bit of elastic gives a little bit of leeway when arguing with the ref.
Anderson, Lewis, Considine aren't captains.
I dare say we will get more positive decisions with Brown

Yeah one argument I'm onboard with is it gives you a chance to get the ref on board.

It's more or less off field duties though.
