The Official Berwick Rangers 2014/2015 Thread

Recommended Posts

Albion have one of these and we're a far bigger club so it's only right we have one. Of course Albion were trying to be as big as Clyde when they did that which only us are.

This thread will contain everything from transfers to the famous 14/15 #invincibles side as we go all season unbeaten, finally proving my shite username chosen as a pubeless 12 year old was a great pick.

Heard a roumer that Patrick Scullion is headed for Berwick in the close-season as the travelling from Dunfermline to Cumbernauld is too much for him three times a week. Good experienced squad player, with two good feet. Can play anywhere through the spine of the team, too.

Hoskins away

Has he gone back to Spartans?

Did ok filling in at centre back. Good left peg on him but didn't look like CC saw him as regular first choice left back. Good luck to him.

His family have moved to Holland and he's teaching over there an unreliable source has told me.

I also notice Drummond and Dunlop giving their thanks and saying goodbye on twitter, so doesn't sound like they'll be back. It's good that our loanees seem to have been impressed by their time at the club though. Can't be a bad thing when trying to pull off similar deals in future.

Signed so far for next season:

Keepers - Bald & Andrews

Defenders - Fairbairn, Tulloch

Midfielders - Gray, Miller, Cameron, P Currie, Notman, Carse, O'Brien

Strikers - Russell, Morris

Still need another 5-6 signings of a quality that will make us title challengers next season. There's a lot of upbeat stuff going around on Berwick threads about next season's campaign, which seems a wee bit premature. Without wanting to piss on anyone's parade, I'd say we've got the rump of a decent squad but it's missing the x-factor that Lee Currie gave us. If he does go, and it's true that Lavery has already signed for East Fife, factor in uncertainty about what's happening with Dalziel and that means we're currently 42 goals short on the squad that just finished this campaign.

Replacing a 17 goal midfielder who is also the best free-kick specialist in the UK (7 or 8 from f/ks this season) is an impossible task. Unless we throw the bank at him and he signs on the dotted line again.I'd like John Gemmell from Stennie and another proven striker, plus Jacobs at right back and Ross Drummond at left back agin if CC can twist Jim Jefferies' arm again. If Dougie Brydon ever retains full fitness, which is probably up there with "I wish that gurning ***t Farage would disappear from my tv screen for good" as an impossible dream, then we're looking good at centre back. Midfield looks decent, with Ben Miller's emergence something to get excited about. But we were weak off the bench for the first half of the season, and that needs to be rectified.

Good start but CC's signings will make or break the campaign. it's going to be an interesting, and hopefully rewarding, summer.

Great post. You've got to wonder if Carse Morris and O'Brien can find that extra bit of speed class or power for this level. And if East Fife come down, and lose 2-0 on a rainy day in Elgin 1st game of season, I hope Lavery is pleased with his decision.

What we really need is that strong "they-dont-like-it-up-em" striker that everyone is looking for. Annan found one - there must be others.

Interesting post but sparks a few debates with me.

I don't agree that replacing Currie is impossible. Fair enough we won't find a midfielder that's going to bang in 17 goals from midfield again, but there's nothing to suggest we can't become better as a team as a result of losing the 42 goals you talk of. I've made the point a couple of times already about the season we won the league. Not one player scored ten goals plus. Currie is clearly a loss but if you replace Lavery with someone who can contribute more to the team up top and either get Dalziel scoring more consistently or a new striker who isn't as 'patchy', I think we'd become a better team for it.

I think we've also got to remember that while Currie was clearly a class act, this is the first season he's hit the volume of goals he has. His previous seasons were nothing out of the ordinary for a good attacking midfielder, but the way the team went this year he was allowed more creative freedom and allowed a bit further forward. He probably wouldn't have got the chance if Easton had stayed. Currie going is a blow, but it opens opportunities for the likes of Miller to take over.

Last season we lost two very good players in Townsley & Easton. We replaced them well with Tulloch & Gray. I have faith therefore that we can replace Currie well, especially with Cameron in charge - I'm excited to see the calibre of player he can attract. His signings so far give good reason to be; Russell and Drummond young players who are hungry for success in the game with a lot of potential. I hope to see a lot more of that. What for me has to be the difference this season if we're to challenge for the title is though that we can't just replace Currie & Lavery. We need to go over and above that. I like the idea of keeping the majority of this squad - they're a talented and sound bunch, but the 5-6 players that come in need to be first team starter level for me.

I'd love to see Gemmell in a Berwick top. At this level he's about as close to the complete striker as you can get. Powerful, a natural scorer and a bit of an arsehole which everybody likes, he'd be a top addition. Sadly I highly doubt we'd get anywhere near him, he'll likely have the pick of the League One clubs.

Farage is a total twat though.

This season is probably the make or break for the likes of Morris, Carse and O'Brien. I think they can be useful options though, so I'm hopeful. Carse and Morris have both had 30 goal odd seasons in the reserves, while O'Brien did well early last season at first team level. If all three can bulk up to handle the rougher defences in the division, they could be challenging next year.

I don't think O'Brien needs to bulk up. He's a canny size already. What he needs is to get some confidence back. He looks frightened whenever he comes on now.

He went from looking sharp, fast and direct at the start of the season to someone who looked happier staying out of the way and like a rabbit in headlights whenever the ball came close to him. I blame Yano a bit tbh. He relied on him far too much when things were going badly. Someone with such little experience can't be expected to the game changer every week.

Thought he had a bit of Greenhill-syndrome about him. Burnt out totally after a quality start. He came back in pre-season looking an absolute tank and seemed to wilt away, getting pushed off the ball with ease by a 17 year old at Shire. Agree that he needs his confidence back and still think Yano is at fault for his burnout. He should have bled him into the team far better rather than shoving him in week in week out.

Are Berwick keeping the majority of this seasons squad? Any rumours on who you may be bringing in?

Club confirmed today 16 staying-on.

Surprised we've kept Dalziel.

http://www.berwickrangersfc.co.uk/f-news/news-articles/five-more-sign.html

9 May 2014

The club would like to confirm that: Devon Jacobs (pictured left), Dean Hoskins, Dean Carse, Scott Dalziel and Ben Miller have put pen to paper and signed contract extensions which take them to the end of season 2014/15. Manager Colin Cameron has been working hard and this now means that 16 players are fully signed up.

They are (in no particular order) Michael Andrews, Billy Bald, Devon Jacobs, Jonny Fairbairn, Stephen Tulloch, Ross Gray, Andy Russell, Scott Dalziel, Dean Carse, Dean Hoskins, Ben Miller, Steven Notman, Paul Currie, Josh Morris, Kenny O’Brien and player boss Colin Cameron. There should be more news soon.

Damian Gielty leaves the club with best wishes. The left sided player who joined from FC Aventir in Luxembourg is moving with his family to Amsterdam very soon.

I'd hoped we could keep Lee Currie and Lavery. Even if we do, we need another 2-3 defenders given we've only 4 currently (looks like Brydon/Downie/Turner away?), and perhaps another striker.

I assume Berwick fans are just about as pleased as the Mo fans are that the Smokies have returned to our cosy little diddy league. At least that'll mean Berwick don't have to play Mo at New Year just because everybody else had a local derby and there was neebody else for you an'us to play!
