You know all the other windows, where we'd have said 'we need a centre half, or a striker, or a winger, or some pace', and Gus and Lennon responded by bringing in central midfielders? Well, this time it's like the club has brought in exactly what we needed, in line with weaknesses in the squad, the demands of the league we play in, and the style of football we all want to see. Coventry Saint Posted August 12, 2014 Share Posted August 12, 2014 You assume/hope that the investment in training facilities will pay off when it comes to developing players, avoiding training injuries, etc. It seems to be playing its part in attracting players to the club, and in helping develop our reputation south of the border as well. That's two of the biggest English clubs now with nice things to say about SMP and Ralston, not to mention the approach our club takes with young players and the support/development opportunities we can offer. Ok, loan deals are what they are (ie not ideal), and we all want our best players on three-year contracts (like that one Josh Magennis has...) but it's not an ideal world and, for a club like ours, it's vital to be as attractive to loanees as possible. Which, hopefully, we are now. I agree with this post entirely. It's a very useful link you guys currently have, both with Newcastle and Man City. It worked well with the likes of Dummett and Newton, not so much with Campbell who was maybe just a bit too young when he came up here. I'd prefer we didn't use the loan market because our experience hasn't been so good. Kudus Oyenuga, Mark Connolly, James Keatings, Gwion Edwards etc have all struggled to make any kind of impact with us. We have had a clearly too good for our level Mehdi Abeid (although he picked up a couple of injuries whilst here), James Dunne and Fat, Balding Lee Croft who have done well for us using the loan market in England though. With regards to youth development - it's good see St Mirren's bearing fruit for them now. 5 or 6 guys have come through who all look like being Premiership standard or better all in your first team. NorthBank Posted August 12, 2014 Share Posted August 12, 2014 We had 5 first team regulars last season from our Academy (McAusland, Kelly, Naismith, McLean and McGinn) and one mostly on the bench each week (Reilly). We only had one loan signing - Newton - getting a regular game. This year we have added another 4 from our Academy to the First Team Squad (Yacub, Brown, Williams and Hughes) giving a total of 10 from the Academy in our squad. Supplementing our home grown players with a few young guns from the Premiership like Dummet - 2 years ago who went back into Newcastle's first team plans, Newton last year and Plummer (who looks like the best of the 3 so far) have improved our squad considerably. Young, fit and eager to get on. The loanees are not keeping out our own talent and are only there in positions we are short of and can prove they are better than what we have (unfortunately Campbell couldn't hold down a place). Exactly. Signing a waster (Harkins, Grainger) on a 1 year deal is pretty much the same to signing a loan player on a 1 year deal. We aren't going to get a fee for either, and they could stop our own youngsters getting a game. However the loan deals are cheaper and I'd say the average EPL youngster is better than the average older SPFL journeymen (Harkins, Grainger). The loan route is certainly the way to go out the two of them, and I'm delighted Tommy has chosen it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
