Raising Standards in the New Scottish Senior Game

The 2014-15 season will see the introduction of play-offs, allowing clubs to move between regional and national senior leagues.

This continuous league pyramid means that the old distinction of senior ‘league’ and ‘non-league’ will be redundant.

We will have a unified senior game of 103 teams, representing 99 clubs, competing over 4 national and 5 regional leagues.

If all senior clubs, competing regionally and nationally, were to meet the SFA’s basic National Club Licencing standards, we would have a good minimum standard for the senior game in Scotland. It would give our highest level of football in Scotland a baseline of quality and depth, and a cohesive identity to be proud of.

The senior Scottish Cup should reflect the breadth and depth of the Scottish senior game by allowing all senior league clubs to compete. If all senior sides are invited to compete, they will be able to fund the necessary improvements to their grounds, youth set-ups, etc to enable them to bring themselves up to a good standard. Participation, not exclusion, raises standards.

It is in the interests and remit of the SFA to help fund a raising of standards in the senior game. It reflects well upon them internationally to have their entire highest level of football looking and acting as professionally as possible – from small, local community clubs to the largest clubs representing Scotland at European level.

Finally, it is in the interests of the SPFL to help fund a raising of standards in the senior game. They need a pool of quality clubs that are ready to be promoted to the national set-up via the play-offs, or in the event of further re-construction.

In addition, they have a responsibility to look after those of their member clubs who are relegated, by helping to provide quality regional leagues for them to participate competitively in. They own the League Cup, and could do worse than integrating the best regional sides into that competition.

Just my thoughts on where the senior game is.

What do folk think??
