It seems like the writers are just mechanically going through the motions. When the Simpsons was good the humour was fresh and inventive and really something different. Jokes were very well written and well crafted. So much care went in to each individual gag, let alone the episode as a whole. Most importantly it was funny. Very funny. Given it's been shit for 66% of it's existence I don't think it can have that tag. I usually get to the clouds and decide if I'll watch it. It's sad that it's still going. Not sure if you've read this, but it's a very good account of the programme's rise and fall. Really long read, admittedly... it is basically a short novel in PDF form so will take a while. But if ever you're bored at work/on public transport, etc, I'd recommend giving it a go.
