We’re joining the dog owners club in a few weeks, with a little Fox Red Lab - who’ll be going by Logan.

Welcome to any tips and advice on first time dog ownership.

If it’s your first time I’d say do a bit of homework in advance. Maybe something like this:

We were advised to use a stairgate to partition off the dog's room, rather than just shutting the door.

Makes the dog feel like they're not trapped in the room apparently.

Agreed. But let them in with you when you’re about!

I know there’s a huge proportion that are almost evangelical about the benefits of crates - and each to their own - but I just don’t think it’s fair. You’ve acquired a social animal to integrate into your family but you put them in a cage? If you’ve the benefit of being able to keep them to a kitchen/utility room at night that, to me and my own world view, is adequate.

I used to be of the same opinion but since Jack appeared I have to say, I've changed my views.

He's horrifically nosey, he can be sound asleep and I change the channel and he's up and about because there was a noise.

I tried for a while with him at night out and about but he just wasn't getting enough sleep - and in turn, wouldn't want to go out for walks.

He's far better in the cage. Might try again in a few months. He will be 2 in April so hopefully with age he calms down a bit.

Prepare for everything and anything in your house to be eaten.

A packet of disposable razors and a tub of gold glitter are the highlights of Skye's "everything is edible" career.

We use a crate too, but hes only locked in it overnight. Tried one night to leave him out with a camera to keep an eye on him, but he was trying to get into everything he could instead of just sleeping. He doesnt seem to mind it all tbh, he goes in there himself for wee snoozes almost every night after his walk and seems to enjoy it as being his own wee space. Certain treats he likes to take in there and just chew away on as if he thinks its private.

Had a major wobble with Jake on Monday, after a few hours on a drip at the vets he was fine again. He's had a good week and the tumor hasn't grown again yet.
He even managed to get his leg over Skye last night.

You need to get one of those speed guns and see what pace he goes at!

Or get him to run past one of those speedometers you see at the side of roads.
