One must presume that the Bank of England would remain in control of the interest rates, completely independent of the UK government as they are currently required to by statute. They question of course is how the BoE deal with having to set interest rates for two distinct and separate economies. Then, as now, one may assume that they will respond to the needs of the economy of the SE of England rather than that of Scotland and so we would have a fiscal system which is less responsive to the needs of Scotland than would otherwise be case with a completely separate currency. That's a compromise to weigh against the benefits of retaining currency links with our nearest neighbour and most important trading partner. It's the same compromise that the Eurozone countries willingly entered into but obviously to a lesser degree since we'd be talking about only two countries rather than twenty odd.

If the cons of having a currency union proved to outweigh the benefits then we'd presumably have to rethink.

Thanks for that common sense articulation, I doubt if the no guys will see it that way though.

All prices will rise. Basic economics

No basic economics means that prices will find a level in the market unless there are cartels or monopolies.

I don't doubt that costs will rise, but they might not be passed on.

The supermarkets and other companies are correct to point out what independence would mean for their business. They should be entitled to do this without morons shouting "scaremongering", but they should also be able to do this without people inferring consequences that are not 100% certain will definitely come to pass.

That's interesting you concede they will rise, but the supermarkets will make the share holder carry the burden.

Not likely.

Also everyone in an independent Scotland will die. Is this true?

Ohh that's great, the Yes voter really pulling a rabbit out the hat with this comment. You're right people will live, lets destroy our economy because people will live.

Scotland will turn into Logan's Run in the even of a yes vote.

Poor Michael York :(

It's hardly a concession. It's basic economics (unlike what you said).

Separate entity with a higher cost per unit due to increased travel costs means costs will obviously rise. Prices will only rise if the market will stand it, otherwise the shareholders will be carrying the burden of reduced sales.

No no. I'm suggesting that in an independent Scotland people will die! Some in terrible pain. Won't somebody think of the children because they're all going to die in an independent Scotland.

Eventually.

Sorry, I'm just joining in with the general tone of the No News. Walmart will pull out of Scotland because it isn't really worth them doing business in such a trifling little country. Right?

Actually this is true. But we'll also all die if we vote NO.

5p more for a tin of fucking beans!?

That's it. I'm off to England.

No need. We can just do a 'bean run' similar to a 'wine run' to France.

Reduced sales? are we all going on a diet?

All supermarkets will be forced to take the choice between losing share value or raising costs. Scotland will still consume the same amount of food.
