CambCelt
a few 100 there according to the bbc. I heard on BBC Radio 5 Live they took about 400. ... and I concur that it was a great result for them.
FraserHFC
I wish I had the money, I was desperate to go to the Hibs friendly against Gibraltar. It looked like a great occasion & trip. I think this result should pave the way for a Spain friendly! Was very tempted to go to that game as well but had to pick between it and Malmo
DA Baracus
I'm all for opening up competitions to all. Glad to see them in the UEFA mix. All that chat that teams like them and Andorra/San Marino/Faroe Islands etc should play some sort of 'pre-qualifying' tournament to qualify for the qualifiers is utter shit peddled by elitist wanks. Mind you, they will be on the end of some appalling thrashings.

HibeeJibee
I think part of the argument is that very few UEFA countries are 'bad' enough to merit that anyway. Not much point prequalifying to bring 54 down to 50 or 45.
HibeeJibee
After drawing them in Euro 2016 qualifying I've been off and had a look at how things have been developing in Gibraltar over the last few months. Quite a few things happening. In the Gibraltar Premier Division (which expanded from 6 clubs to 8 this season for UEFA requirements), Lincoln sat top by 1pt from Lynx in the hunt for the Champions League slot. Lincoln won the League Cup Final on Saturday past. It's been confirmed that the Europa League slot will go to the winner of the Rock Cup (their FA Cup). It's at the QF stage, Final in May.Club season, which usually runs October-May, is apparently to expand to August-May from next season - to make more matches and help better-prepare their domestic players for the Euro 2016 qualifiers.Looking at photos it seems the Victoria Stadium has undergone something of a refit with new red seating ahead of their firstever home international v the Faroes this Saturday. There is only actually 1 other football ground in Gibraltar at the moment, at Devil's Tower Barracks. However they've put out a video showing their plans for their new 10,000-12,000 all-seat stadium. Interestingly there is a substantial stadium just a few hundred yards across the border into Spain. SimonLichtie
Rather interesting that - although I must ask with them having 8 teams in their premier league (resulting in what I presume is 4 weekly fixtures), with only two football grounds in the country, how do they get these games played?!

Victoria Stadium has an artificial pitch - FIFA 2 Star - and will often host 3 Premier matches per weekend... 1 on Friday night, 1 on Saturday afternoon, 1 on Saturday evening. They also have a 10-team First Division and 9?-team Reserve League. http://gfa.gibraltarfa.com/senior-fixtures.html Having searched online, it seems the artificial backpitch behind the Victoria Stadium - 'Tercentenary Sports Centre' - is also available. It's also got a grandstand although in photos it appears lined for hockey only. http://www.gsla.gi/gsla-facilities/ http://www.theesto.com/esto-news-link/synthetic-turf-in-gibraltar http://footballgibraltar.wordpress.com/tag/victoria-stadium/ Edited February 24, 2014 by HibeeJibee
jock001
Are those training pitches maybe a wee bit close to the runway? Aren't the fences at the sides of them a little short?
HibeeJibee
Stray balls are the least of their worries... the main north-south highway runs right across the runway, and if a pilot should ever overshoot at either end they'll be in the harbour or alternatively in the Mediterranean Sea!!

7-2
Design for new Europa Point Stadium unveiled: Love how they've included the diagonal safety channel so that any ship mistaking the floodlights for the lighthouse can park safely between the stands.
Mr Bairn
Is there a timeframe for completion? Given that we don't play them until the last matchday in late 2015, could that be the opener?
HibeeJibee
What's that monument/tower in the bottom photo? Looks a bit muslimy. Mosque. Saudi's built it. Love how they've included the diagonal safety channel so that any ship mistaking the floodlights for the lighthouse can park safely between the stands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Fedra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_New_Flame Ahem, well, you jest... Blootoon87
The stadium plans are impressive but is it really necessary? I doubt they'll ever fill it, certainly not domestically anyway.
7-2
Ahem, well, you jest... Yeh, not surprising really given the need for a lighthouse to be built there. The stadium plans are impressive but is it really necessary? I doubt they'll ever fill it, certainly not domestically anyway. I'd say it is if they want to be taken seriously on the international stage. Also QP don't fill Hampden too often domestically either. It may just be because it's a graphic but the stadium looks massive and a bit out of scale. Nice though.
Jamaldo
What I don't understand is how Gibraltar's current stadium is not up to UEFA requirements but apparently the stadiums of San Marino and Andorra are.
kerrdavidson95
Love going to Gibraltar, always makes a welcome stop on the way back from Med-cruises to Dover/Southampton as I can pop into Morrison's and buy some Irn-Bru before returning to the ship. The Europa Point Stadium will be a brilliant sight when coming in to port, have a picture on my phone with a view of the Rock as we were taking the pilot rounding the Point. Its a shame it won't be ready for our qualifiers as Gibraltar could make a brilliant away trip.
