Poaching Managers

Recommended Posts

Terry Butcher has been poached by Hibs, so historically how has it worked out for managers moving between sides in the top flight?

There are a few examples I can remember and they are pretty mixed bag.

Aberdeen

Mark McGhee - Motherwell - Eh, not successful would be the polite way of putting this

Craig Brown - Motherwell - Moved upstairs to make room for a new man, had minimal impact, as bad as McGhee

Jimmy Calderwood - Dunfermline - Those Dandies are poaching bassas. Calderwood decent enough but left under somewhat strange circumstances having just qualified for Europe

Celtic

Tommy Burns - Kilmarnock - Won a Scottish Cup which might have been a success for Celtic at the time

Dundee United

Craig Brewster - ICT - This might be the worst poaching of a manager ever

HIbernian

Terry Butcher - ICT - Let's wait and see

Bobby Williamson - Kilmarnock - I don't remember how he got on at Hibs

Alex McLeish - Motherwell - Couldn't save them from relegation but won promotion, then appears again on the list

Hearts

John Robertson - ICT - Binned less than a year later

Tommy McLean - Motherwell - Technically resigned but found his way to Tynie less that two weeks laters :unsure2: binned in a year

Rangers

Alex McLeish - Hibernian - Won a fair whack at Rangers but was never really convincing, held his own against Martin O'Neill

Dundee United also poached Craig Levein from Raith Rovers to replace Brewster, which worked out pretty fcuking well for us. Not so much for Scotland though!

Co-incidentally, we also nicked Tommy McLean from Raith Rovers, and he was fanbloodytastic for around 9 months!

Levein was statistically probably the worst manager we've ever had. So much so we weren't even paying him (don't know if he's a Raith supporter).

Utter nonsense.

When Brown took over the club were rooted to the bottom of the table and had a few weeks before lost 9-0 to Celtic.

We were a shambles when McGhee left. Brown did a job.

He didn't do enough to ever be considered a big success, but take into consideration much of the current team is the one he put together, while moving on under achievers like Foster, Diamond, Mackie, etc.

McInnes has come in at the right time to take it to the next level. Would McInnes be currently getting these performances out of McGhee's team though?

As for Calderwood. Correct appointment at the time. Three good years. Two poor ones. Was right time to go, team were declining under him.

Has Claude Anelka been mentally block from your memory?

We all accept Anelka is the worst manager we've ever had, but the guy who followed (Dalziel) was the worst domestic manager we've ever had. However Levein only managed to win 1 in 7 games while we were in the second division.

Even if they ended their reigns fairly poorly I'd say both Calderwood at Aberdeen and McLeish at Oldco both by and large were successful. But there really aren't many other examples of successful in-league managerial movements. Terry Butcher is doomed to fail at Hibs.

Levein was a Raith fan as a kid, and he was certainly working without a contract, though I'm sure they were paying him something. I think we took Tommy McLean after around 6 days in Kirkcaldy.

Going back the years, we nicked Jerry Kerr from Alloa and he worked out pretty damn well. The true 2nd best manager in United's history, no matter what the demented mind of Peter Houston will tell ya!

And all of this sterling work contributed to a colossal single place rise in the table as well as the biggest spend ever seen in the Motherwell club shop, of course.
