I got left a 1000 Royal Bank shares in 2006.

Cashed them in right away because i was skint.

Got between 5K and 6K for them.

Two years later they were worth 22p each.

Nice timing. RBS (Natwest now) is back to £2.72 at the moment so if you'd bought at 22p........

Similarly I sold BP about a month before the gulf of Mexico disaster. Just pure luck.

They revalued their shares a while back where 10 shares were swapped for 1 at 10x the price. So that £2.72 is really the equivalent of 27.2p.

A shrewd move to sell. I was eying them in the 22p or maybe even lower days thinking I could make a killing out them when they recovered. Glad I didn't as they never have!

Cheers for the info. I never knew about the share swop, just looked at the price today. I've not held them for years.

I've never held any crypto and don't think I ever will now. I had thought about it in 2013 but never took the plunge. Mainly the old adage, never invest in things you don't understand.

So no shares in Aberdeen FC then?

Binance are also under investigation by the US authorities for money laundering and sanction evading.

And that investigation seems to have finally borne fruit

The Securities and Exchange Commission in the us are taking both Binance and Coinbase to court and payment services providers have responded by suspending  services with Binance US so can’t currently support cash transactions. They can trade their casino chips for other chips but they can’t actually cash out

Patrick Boyle’s video on this is quite good. At the end he argues counterintuitively that SEC should probably stay away from regulating crypto because being regulated would put a veneer of respectability on the whole thing and that any regulatory regime should be more akin to that for gambling

right at the start of this thread there were questions about whether it belonged on the gambling forum. Maybe the debate is about to catch up with P&B

The only good thing that I have found about crypto, is the "Missing Crypto Queen" podcast from the BBC (link).

A riveting, if absolutely demoralising, story about a charlatan stealing millions from gullible, uneducated investors all over the world.  She is now reportedly hiding out in Dubai (shock horror...).  Well worth a listen.

As for investing in the stuff?  I'll leave that to the experts...  I bought a few hundred dollars of BTC once, many years ago, but it jumped up and down so far each day that it didn't really feel like an investment at all and I sold it a couple of weeks later.

Aye, that Cryptoqueen podcast is excellent (it's also available on Spotify for those outside the UK). Only slightly annoying thing about its sporadic releases (the last one - 22nd December - promised of imminent new revelations and that was 9 months ago). Tbf, they only release episodes when they have enough news, so at least they're not releasing shite just for the sake of it, but the story is genuinely mysterious and riveting (and ongoing).

Another very good podcast along a similar vein is CBC's "The Naked Emperor" about the meteoric rise and spectacular fall of Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of FTX.  Well worth a listen.

In other news, I am absolutely shocked to see that the value of some "Bored Ape" NFTs appear to be worth a very small fraction of what some people have paid for them (although the most shocking line of the article must be that people are still paying $50,000 (!) for these things).

SBF guilty.  He'll be in jail for a long time.

No wonder this thread's gone quiet.

I am balls deep in FTT now, rumours they are signing a sponsorship deal with Miami Heat's arena, and possibly launching a sportsbook. BNB did a 10x in 3 months from 30$ (for different reasons, but still..). FTT sitting at 40$ looks ready to moon.
