Conspiracies

Recommended Posts

Butterbean was that lad who the Jackass boys paid to leather the f**k out of Johnny Knoxville in one of the films, wasn't he?

Anyway, we watched Behind the Curve a few days ago, the documentary on the Flat Earth movement. Seems like a mix of folk who crave recognition, but don't have the skills or talent to achieve it, and out-and-out scam artists who have seen there's money to be made out of...well, folk like @wisbit, who've decided to believe everyone's lying to them about everything. Amusing to see how often they viciously turn on each other, and there are some delicious moments where people come very close to self-awareness when slating other Flat-Earthers, yet back away before acknowledging they could just as easily be discussing themselves.

Anyone mentioned the Freemen on the Land lads yet? Still haven't managed to find one of them who can coherently explain what their beliefs are.

For anyone that is unfamiliar with this photo its Lyndon B Johnson about to be sworn in as the US President on Airforce 1. In the foreground is the grieving Jackie Kennedy, John F Kennedy had been assassinated only 2 hours ago. In this photo LBJ is seen to turn and receive a wink and a smile from his friend congressman Albert Thomas, LBJ is clearly smiling back. Now there my not be anything sinister there, it was certainly out of order and insensitive in the presence of the grieving widow but it does add to the whole JFK assassination conspiracy and it has been said that Jackie Kennedy suspected LBJ of arranging to have her husband killed. Also some have said that the photo is fake, hence the white arrow pointing to Albert Thomas' head where there is a strange dark line behind him.

the dark line is the gap between 2 panels in the aircraft and the Thomas face looks wrong in that picture compared to this one

I always wondered what these nobs would do if I turned up with a baseball bat with a nail in it, battered shite out of them and stole their telly.

"Storyville" on BBC4 tonight was about the death of UN Secretary Dag Hammerskold  - you got two conspiracy theories for the price of one as added to the mysterious death of Hammerskold one guy started mentioning that there had been a plot to spread AIDS to black Africans in the 1980s.. worth a watch.

I wonder if JFK had lived, would there have been a Vietnam War?

Alternative history is a little bit pointless but here goes.

Kennedy was president when you always had to be more anti-communist than the other guy.

The South Vietnamese leader had been assassinated only three weeks before Kennedy was.  South Vietnam was a corrupt failing country that would struggle to survive without America's help.

The main foreign policy at that time was to oppose communism everywhere and at all times.  I find it hard to imagine how Kennedy could have avoided the Vietnam War.

Maybe, but why didn't America invade Cuba or bomb the missile sites 1962/63?
It's a strange one that America with their zero toleration of Communism never interfered or undermined Castro's Cuba as they did in other Central American countries.
They tried pretty fucking hard but fucked it up. Kennedy was laughed at due to the bay of pigs and it pissed a lot of people off.

November 1963 — By this time, Kennedy had increased the number of military personnel from the 900 that were there when he became President to 16,000 just before his death.[13]
November 22, 1963 — Kennedy is assassinated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role_of_the_United_States_in_the_Vietnam_War#John_F._Kennedy_(1961–63)

The "Vietnam War" was a civil war in all but name between a communist backed north Vietnam and the US backed south. As the north was committed with all its being to "liberate" the south, there was always going to be a Vietnam war. The US had been involved since supporting the French in 1950. Modern western popular culture is coloured by 80s action films about how traumatising being in the war was for middle class American kids and their new found black buddies (see Platoon, Casualties of War etc).

Kennedy was fully committed to using US military to help one side of the conflict. The utter drivel by Oliver Stone, JFK, promoted some silly conspiracy about Bell Helicopters and Kennedy wanting out of Vietnam.

Quote

In 1968, Garrison meets a high-level figure in Washington D.C. who identifies himself as "X". He suggests a conspiracy at the highest levels of government, implicating members of the CIA, the Mafia, the military-industrial complex, Secret Service, FBI, and Kennedy's vice-president and then president Lyndon Baines Johnson as either co-conspirators or as having motives to cover up the truth of the assassination. X explains that the President was killed because he wanted to pull the United States out of the Vietnam War and dismantle the CIA. X encourages Garrison to keep digging and prosecute New Orleans-based international businessman Clay Shaw for his alleged involvement. When Shaw is interrogated, the businessman denies any knowledge of meeting Ferrie, O'Keefe or Oswald, but he is soon charged with conspiring to murder the President.

Indeed. I’m reading a book called JFK and the Unspeakable right now, and it’s a lot of absolute tosh. Apparently it was the Soviets, the Cubans, the Mafia and the CIA who teamed up for some reason to stop JFK from leaving Vietnam and dismantling the FBI. Or some such.

Edit: the writer seems to think that there were two Lee Harvey Oswald.

They did invade.  It was a fiasco.  Bay of Pigs.

One problem was getting mixed up about time zones.  The reinforcements from Central America turned up an hour late.

Another problem was that Castro was seen as a liberation army and it was too late to portray them as insurgents or terrorists.

Peppino Impastato would love to enlighten you.

It is amazing how some people challenge the official record - "don't believe a word they say" but accept every word from a conspiracy theorist.

It was a lot easier and safer to pull their missiles out of Turkey in exchange for Russia pulling theirs from Cuba. Safer for all of us.

Whit? You mean apart from the assassination attempts, sanctions, funding and training exile armies and stuff?

Or photography during the sixties wasn't of particularly high quality, especially when it happened on a aeroplane at short notice. What a stupid theory.

Seen as we're talking about JFK, Cuba and conspiracies, it seems only fair to bring up Operation Northwoods (although this isn't really a conspiracy, it happened) - a false flag attack planned against Cuba that got all the way to JFK before being rejected. Things like Operation Northwoods are a big reason you see so many loony theories about these days IMO - folk point to that and say "see! it happens" and apply loose logic to other situations.
