That article states help for the Moderate opposition.

That most certainly is not the rebels with the reports coming out about the mass killings of Christians.

If the rebels win there will be no such thing as a moderate opposition to take charge.

Think it's obvious the West now wants Assad to stay in power in much the same way that military dictorship is now seen as acceptable in Egypt, but there's no way they can say that publicly at this point. Think it's also obvious that a nearby oil rich state has to be funding all the Islamic crazies from other countries that are fighting in Syria and the Saudis are the prime suspects on that. Given the USA needs oil to be paid for in dollars to keep their currency afloat and their debt serviced, New York Times journalists probably won't be pointing that out any time soon.

Looks like many conspiracy theorists have been proven right after all these years. It turns out Al Qaeda are really just CIA operatives. Fellow jihadists groups fighting along side them in Syria are accusing them of betraying their jihad. They're accusing them of having ulterior motives (what a surprise), and being backed by the West. They also accuse them of devating from their cause, and trying to divide them.
