The wife's I.6 diesel Focus failed the NCT today due to "smoke".
She rarely drives it hard so I'm hopeful am Italian Tuneup will help, but if not, how do we fix this?

Drive it like ya stole it for a day.  All will be fine.  👍

I'm really at a cross roads here. I'm a long term diesel driver/fan. I like the pull it has the torque and dig along with the range.

I drove a tesla recently and f**k me it was fun. Never mind the instant power down and go action.  The ipad on the dashboard was instant entertainment. No self drive on this one but I'm intrigued as to what that offers.

I was skeptical of electric cars and I still am ti a degree but if they an get the range on them then bring it on.

Mrs. Nosejob has owned an electric car for 18 months and I switched to a PHEV earlier this year.
Both cars get about 2 miles per kWh so, charging them overnight on an economy7 tariff at 5p per kWh and assuming £1.35 per litre for unleaded, you’re looking at an equivalent of about 240mpg. The instant power is, as you say, outstanding.

Impressive equivalent MPG figs. What about the cost of installing charging equipment, and is it absolutely necessary?

Mrs Nosejob must love her name, btw.

Home charging equipment can go up to 32 A instead of 13 A with a normal plug.  A lot of cars can only consume 16A  unless plugged into a rapid charger like Chademo.  A wall  charger basically gives you faster charge and is more convenient if you opt for tethered.

We’ve had two fitted in this house and our last and with government grants they were basically free.  £500 from UK gov and £300 from scot gov.

Alternatively, or additionally, you can pay an annual subscription of £20 to Chargeplace Scotland and get access to their public network of charging stations. Some of these stations are free but most have a cost per kWh and some have a maximum time limit.

We ditched our chargeplace subscription when they started charging for the power.  The rates weren’t cheap compared to what we got at home.  We have solar panels too which offsets a lot of it so we only charge at home now.

Can't see me wanting to drive more than 200 miles without stopping for half an hour for a coffee while it recharges.

My mother lives nearly 100 miles away. By the time I get there driving in hybrid mode, my PHEV’s battery is below 10%. There is a free charging station about ½ mile walk from her home. When I get back to my car after my 2-3 hour visit, the battery is back up at 100%.

I think that’s my difficulty with them currently. With work, 100+miles out and back is easy done a couple of times a week and if I get there and discover the charge point is in use or I’m away from infrastructure?

I don’t think I’m quite ready for the leap of faith just yet.

Don’t think I’m ready for full electric yet either even though we don’t really do many long journeys.  For day to day use the PHEV option suits us.  As FN said if you combine it with a cheap overnight electricity tariff and add in solar the cost per mile becomes tiny.  Every 3 months the battery stops putting out power to force us to put 15 litres of petrol in to recycle the fuel so we’re running that car on about £6 of fuel per month + some cheap electricity.

I looked at a Zoe but would've had to pay £80 a month for the battery rental.

I thought they stopped that a couple of years ago?

Yes, I was just away looking at Google and seems ended in 2019.
