The Star Wars thread

Recommended Posts

I have seen the film, and overall I really enjoyed it.  I thought it was better than TFA , it had more substance and it was visually stunning.   The film is flawed with several things not quite working, but the film was still enjoyable despite these setbacks.  Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill were superb.

I thought the Leia scene was awful,  although she is a Skywalker so her doing that shouldn't be much of a surprise, I thought the scene didn't work at all.  The casino scene wasn't needed at all, but I think the introduction of Benny Del Toro's character may well have an impact in the next film. Much like when you first watched Starwars you didn't quite know which way Han Solo was going to go.

I would have slightly tweaked two of Luke's scenes.  Firstly when Yoda turns up I would have had him repeat another one of his lessons, unlearning what he has learned with Ben Solo to train Rey.  Also I think as we saw Ben Solo stopping a laser blast in TFA, Luke stopping the AT-AT's lasers and firing them back on themselves would have been a better way for Kylo to realise he would have to face Luke face to face.

There was no real need to have Luke pass into the force.  Although it will not have an impact on him appearing in the next one, I felt it didn't need to be done, certainly with Han dying in the last, Carrie Fisher dying in real life.  He will appear to Rey and Kylo as a force ghost in the next one.

The Snoke throne room scene was excellent.  Snoke dying was a surprise, but I think it was needed to build Kylo Ren.  Adam Driver steals the show.  The mind linking of Leia and Luke immediately before the mind linking of Kylo and Rey certainly does imply where Rey's parentage lies.

I would give an eight out of ten.  Nowhere near as good as Empire or Starwars, but entertaining , and a bit ahead of the likes of ROTJ, TFA and ROTS.

I thought it was a bit meh. My main problem with it was that the focus was in the wrong place. I personally didn’t get enough of Kylo, Luke and Rey - who were all excellent- and found the other subplots, especially Finn’s, irritating. They flapped around a lot, but didn’t really go anywhere. We learned more about Poe than we did Finn, though.
That Leia scene was horrific, as was the bit with Finn and Rose riding the horse things. There were times where Benicio Del Torro’s character verged on Jar Jar with his stammers lacklustre delivery.
Also, f**k Porgs.

I did have a chuckle at the opening with Hux and Poe.

Took the family to see it last night.

The wee man wanted to watch it kitted out in his Kylo Ren costume, to everyone's delight.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wasn't in dunfermline was it?

There was an adult and child storm trooper kicking about last night. The adult was taking pictures for a donation to charity which was fair enough. The kid wasn't though he can f**k off the wee shite.

Nah, he was the supreme leader of the First Order, not your lowly foot soldier.

I’ve just seen it now.

Oh my fucking god I’m on cloud nine. The only way i could feel I as good as this is if I gubbed a pinga. Wow. I thought that was spectacular. Better than FA and Rogue 1.

My wife who isn't a star wars fan loved it and said it' the best one yet.

For me, I have grown up a star wars fan, all the figures, ships, the lot. This was for me the worst star wars film yet. I didn't like the force awakens, and hoped this one would redeem this new trilogy but sadly No, was even worse. The cheap laughs, the story line, bad writing, just about everything. Even some of the effects looked off to me. The only scene that I liked was the throne room scene, that was decent.

No doubt many will disagree but for me, worse than the prequels.

I must admit, I watched Rogue One again last night and was very impressed with the story telling and gives a real sense of rebellion, the character building and detail makes it more appealing as a movie experience.

The Last Jedi has that magical Disney effect and is catered towards the younger generation.

Just out of seeing it. Enjoyed it. Obviously the Leia scene was daft, mainly because it served no purpose as Leia did f**k all in the film. Enjoyed Snoke giving the big one only to be bumped off. Would like to have known a bit more about him though. Still pretty unclear about the Knights of Ren and their motives as well, if indeed they still exist. Kylo is all about the dark side but he's not a Sith.

Didn't see the need for Luke to die either. When we saw his X-Wing in the water I was convinced he'd raise it out, like Yoda did on Dagobah. That's probably why they showed it though.

Looking forward to where they'll take the next one. Only 2 years to go...

Mostly agree.

I was pretty disappointed. From the opening scene where Poe is taking the piss out of Hux for cheap Disney laughs it felt (unfortunately as my daughter has that on all the time) like a descendents film. I half expected a musical interlude. It totally detracted from the seriousness of the situation for me, and not in the way Ford depicted Solo in the originals where it added to the scene. This was just forced Disney pish that added nothing.

Similarly when Luke threw away the lightsaber. Luke has never, ever, been that jovial.

The Leia scene, less said about it the better.

For me, Adam Driver saves the film from getting the worst of the franchise tag. His portrayal of Kylo Ren was excellent, and along with Ridley and Hamill, carried the film. There was nowhere near enough of them and far too much pointless storylines. The Finn/Rose half hour was cringe worthy and a total waste of screen time that should have been devoted to Kylo, Ray and Luke.

And there was far too much of Poe. As a character I have no time for him. I think of I was part of the rebellion he'd 100% be the victim of a friendly fire incident. Every time he comes on screen I think Nick from "New Girl" has wandered onto the wrong set. He's just totally out of place for me and when compared to, for example, Cassien in Rogue One, who is a similar character, he just comes across as a complete child.

Overall, pretty disappointed, but for the 3 main characters who I didn't get enough of and the throne room scene. Of the new films, Rogue One pisses all over this. Too Disney, not enough Star Wars.

One last thought. I thought they missed an opportunity for those of us who grew up with this franchise during the Kylo/Luke fight scene. Master, Apprentice, fighting, Luke surely knowing he was about to enter the force, surely "if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you could ever imagine" had to be the line. Even though I didn't like the film, I still reckon that would have had me welling up.

I don't remember folk crying about the laughs in The Force Awakens. Seems like a bandwagon has picked a few folk up..

Just back from seeing it, I thought it was alright. It definitely wasn't as bad as the prequels.

I was mainly annoyed at the how the movie seemed to drag on after that throne scene. The throne scene was easily one of the best parts to the new movies so far and I quite surprised with what happened in it. Though I feel they should have ended the film just after that scene.

Also that Leia scene was just odd and made me cringe more than anything. While the appearance of a certain character was surprising, but the design looked weird and almost hilarious (my phone doesn't like the spoiler tag so not going to go into any detail about it).

FWIW, I said the same about TFA. Though there didn't seem to be as many instances in that and they at least seemed in the right places. This one started out that way, in the opening scenes, which I thought set the wrong tone for the whole movie.

Plus, as above, I don't like Poe, which didn't help.

Just my opinion, I know folk will disagree, I'm not trying to convince anyone.

What did you expect Poe to say?

"Aye Hux, I'm just delaying you so if you wouldn't mind waiting a couple of minutes that would be smashing."

Just home from watching with the boy. It was good but I am undecided where to rank it. Too many loose ends leave me feeling frustrated. What was the fucking point of Snoke? Didn't like Poe in TFA but thought he was much better here. Adam Driver totally deserves all the plaudits. Leia=WTF, Holdo also a pointless character, Benecio could be good if he's lined up for IX. Would like to see Anakin in the next one bringing balance to Rey/Kylo
