All of the paramilitaries use recognised code words when phoning threats to the press; that way the press (supposedly) knew whether or not there was any believabilty in the threats. Perhaps not all of the employees, but the Editors and more senior employees certainly do. That is how the police verify what the press then pass on to them. Was doing the Belfast bus tour on Saturday with a poster from here and we approached the Odyssey Arena where, among other things, the ice hockey team plays. During the Troubles the media, police and army often needed to know when they were receiving a genuine communique from the paramilitaries rather than a crank call from some wee ned/spide, so they were told code words to look out for so they could tell what was genuine. If those were received it was taken seriously, if not it tended to be ignored.
