The realisation that even with being able to travel at the speed of light it would still take three years to reach the nearest star is a bit overwhelming.

Even if a planet responded somehow it would take years or decades to have a conversation.

Hello this is earth.

three years pass

What?

Voyager may have left the Heliosphere, but it still has to reach the Oort Cloud - a region of comets and dust at the edge of the Solar System.

It gets there in about 300 years.

ETA - and 30,000 years to get through it

Voyager 1, travelling at 17km/sec, will take 75 thousand years to reach the distance of our nearest star. Apparently there's an 85% chance of finding an Earth like planet around Alpha Centauri. We need to get a lot faster, or build generational space ships.

Watched a documentary about Bob Lazar last night on sky. What a total crackpot. He basically started the area 51 thing but it does seem weird he's stuck to his story even in court and been hassled by the FBI. Even if he's lying then he seems like the best liar I've ever seen plus he passed lie detector tests and hypnosis.
Worth a watch.
