D.A.F.C
This whole size of the universe thing is still messing with my head. Watched something last night that explained that if one of the largest stars in the milky way had went supernova in the 14th century it would only just be visible in the night sky.Weird to think that you can see things that haven't existed for so long.

Some of the things in the night sky don’t exist but its taken the light so long to reach us because they are so far away so we don’t know if something has happened to them. I guess scientists have a rough idea when stars will supernova? The star they mentioned was Betelgeuse and it’s massive. It would be like the centre of our sun to Jupiter. Say it blew up 600 years ago, the light would hit us about now. 642 light years.

If you take further, everything you see nearby is what it was a fraction of a second ago.

All the grey bits are clusters of galaxies and all the white bits are unexplained expanses of nothing. Needs something thrown in for scale. I believe the standard tabloid go-to is a London bus. Or the Eiffel Tower, if taller.

Newbornbairn
Why we haven't heard from aliens yet That's the Milky Way. The blue dot is 200 light years across. We've been emitting radio waves for 100 years.
SweeperDee
Considering the sheer vastness of that picture, it really puts into perspective how petty and insignificant life on Earth actually is. We could possibly never begin to pretend to comprehend what lies beyond that little blue dot in the picture, considering we can’t really fully comprehend what lies IN the little blue dot.
