NFL General Discussion

This day 88 years ago on December 18th 1932 the NFL's first ever playoff game occurred between the Chicago Bears & the Detroit Lions under their previous Porsmouth Spartans moniker.

At the time the championship was awarded to the team with the best regular season record but in this case both teams couldn't be separated via the tiebreaker criteria of winning percentage (excluding ties) & curiously both that season's games between the two ended in a tie.  Draws were common place in that era as sudden death OT didn't come until 1974

To complicate things even more championship deciding post-season matches had been banned in 1924 so technically the game was played & counted as a replay with the winner getting an extra win on their regular season record.

Further of note due to the weather the game was played indoors at the Chicago Stadium due to adverse weather resulting in an 80 yard field which led to some rule modifications for the the game & was the first and only time an 80 yard field has been used in an NFL game. In 2019 the Raiders & Packers played a pre-season game at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers IG Field that had an 80 yard field due to modifications relating to safety concerns & CFL fields being longer than the NFL.

The Bears won a 9-0 slogfest thanks to a 4th quarter pass by Bronko Nagurski to Red Grange & a safety after a tackle on Mule Wilson in his own red zone.

The following season saw the league expanding from 8 to 10 teams & splitting into east & west divisions with the winner of each contesting the championship. The Bears beat the Giants 23-21 at Wrigley Field. Another knock on from the 1932 game rule modifications was the league moved away from college ball rules & developed some of their own revisions as then commissioner Joseph Carr felt the rule changes created better scoring opportunities.

1933 was also the last season of the Portsmouth Spartans as the team re-located from their small 20k town in Ohio to Detroit, Michigan for the 1934 season & re-branded.  After the move the last remaining small market team was & is the Green Bay Packers who unlike other small market teams survived outright or in their original small town market & to this day are rather unique among teams in the major leagues of US Sports.

How bad are this years Jets compared to the '08 Lions & the '17 Browns?

Historically no team has been worse than the 1976 Tampa Bay Bucaneers, an expansion team in their first ever season. Even taking in account playing less games they were truly awful. They lost all 14 games, didn't score a point till the 3rd game and no TDs till the 4th game. The run continued into the next season as the team lost the first 12 games of that year too.

Hall of Fame pass rusher Kevin Greene has died, aged 59. More notable for his time at the Rams, but he did have a season at the 49ers in which they won the NFC West. He had 160 sacks in a 15 season career, the 3rd highest in NFL history. Also had stints with the Steelers and Panthers.

The fact that thebpro bowl is voted for by fans makes it even more of a sham, maybe im biased as a Saints fan or judt because i watch them every week but Trey Hendrikson is the sack leader with Aaron Donald and hasnt been selected an Demario Davis has been immense against the run in the best run D in the league but just not popular enough for the voters.

The Pro Bowl is a joke.

Pouncey and DeCastro getting in for the Steelers when that line has been complete dogshit is ridiculous.

The pro bowl is a popularity contest. Nobody takes it serious anymore.

In sad news Hall of Fame pass rusher Kevin Greene has died suddenly at 58 years old. If you get a chance watch his episode of “A football life”, what a character and player he was

Surely this when finished is going to be enough to force him to sell...
Also, Dwayne Haskins is an absolute fud.  Time to just cut his arse.

Came on to post about Haskins, he was previously fined for breaching Covid rules, would expect he gets a suspension now.
