Sons' sorrow

Some of the Facebookers are stating that some sort of refund should be given by the SPFL. Looking back on it, the only refund being dished out should be from the players and manager to the fans for lack of control.

The ref was shite but that yesterday was down to very experienced players losing the plot.

If McGeever is humped it'll be Carswell and Lynch at centre back next week. Which doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. I thought Pignatiello looked much better at right back on Saturday though, offered a threat down that side.

Do think Faz needs to figure out the midfield though, Paton is a starter and so should McKee be, but we can't be using McKee wide, he's too good at threading passes to be out there expected to beat a man and get balls in. Wilson should be given as much game time as possible but will need protected at times. It's fitting them into a good shape where we have bother, starting to wonder if a 433 suits us best.

The really annoying thing about yesterday, and by Jesus there were many, was that when football broke out we played better and created more chances than we have done for weeks.

I still hope McGeever makes it for Saturday but I'm not dismayed that Bucky and Geggan will be absent.  We will basically be down to a starting eleven and a couple of subs but we should still be able to compete.

Something that was lost in yesterday's mayhem was that young Schiavone put in a very decent shift despite a buffeting which the ref almost totally ignored.

I think yesterday will galvanise the team a bit. We  equalised twice, the 2nd time in the most difficult of circumstances with 8 men. If that kind of battling performance doesnt galvanise the squad then there's something wrong. I can't fault the players at all yesterday. Buchanan gave away a daft penalty. Beyond that they were absolutely right to criticise the ref, and I normally have little sympathy for bookings for dissent.

The big problem is that we'll be short 3 players and that I'd expect the SFA/SPFL to have a go at us for failing to control our players during the match. I'd hope that we fight it all the way because Lambie was genuinely deranged yesterday with those decisions. And the magic "lets play stoppage time until Airdrie score".

Yeah I can't think why a game with 7 or 8 bookings, 3 red cards, 6 substitutions, a penalty that took an age to take due to MacLean's refusal to leave the pitch, wild goal celebrations that took a while to settle and Ramsbottom wasting time with every goal-kick he eventually shanked out would have much added time. What's the difference between the yellow cards your team got for dissent yesterday and the ones you normally have little sympathy for?

The ref didn’t even warn Ramsbottom for time wasting. He booked him straight off and after that their was little time wasting from him. Unlike at the Rock where your keeper started time wasting in the first half. Six minutes is highly unusual in any game unless there is a lengthy stoppage for injury

Shame we didn't get an away trip to Sauchie. Part of the fun of drawing a team like that is going somewhere fans haven't been before.

Just checked where their ground is and I used to run past it all the time and had no idea it was there.

Maybe we'll be able to grind out a 0-0 for a replay.

Or does Covid deem that this game is played to a finish on the day?

There are replays taking place in the 2nd round so it looks like they're back.

Anyone else feel that if we had an ever so slightly better/competent goalkeeper then we may be in a significantly better position in the league? I find that every other week I feel he could have done better in preventing us conceding a goal.

We have weaknesses throughout the team but I genuinely feel like this is the position where we made a biggest mistake in rushing to re-sign him. Fair enough shotstopper but an absolute bombscare and makes far too many mistake and wrong choices for me - like he did in costing us a point yesterday.

I've got to agree with this, and the further worry is that his replacements don't inspire confidence either.

We all knew Ramsbottom was a liability, I was surprised Faz kept him but wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Its not worked out and I'd be looking for a replacement in the summer (can't see us doing anything there in January). Until then it's suck it and see.

I thought Schiavone was excellent on Saturday. I’ve seen Dumbarton a few times now and I haven’t been too impressed with Orsi up front, most of the threat has came through the wide players but Schiavone looked a real step up on Saturday and lead the line really well. Due to injuries/COVID we haven’t been able to play Kerr and Fordyce together much but when they have played they’ve generally strolled it. Saturday was their poorest game as a pairing though, Kerr particularly struggled to deal with Schiavone throughout the game.

I thought Schiavone was our best player. He lead the line exceptionally well for an 18-year-old making his first senior start. He's impressed me a few times off the bench too. Orsi has blown hot and cold so far, but Schiavone's showing on Saturday was every bit as good as the best Orsi has played for us (in the 5-0 v East Fife). He was strong, intelligent, unselfish and showed a few great turns of pace.

I also thought Carlo Pignatiello made a big different at right-back. His delivery into the box was a big step up on Edin Lynch's.

I've been thinking a bit about Saturday and (assuming everyone is fit who should be fit) then I'd like to see us go for something like this.

Ramsbottom

Pignatiello Lynch Carswell Boyle

McKee Paton

Duthie Stokes Wilson

Schiavone

I'm a wee bit concerned about the centre-halves. But that aside that team doesn't look horrendously weak given we're without one of our best players in MacLean and both first choice centre-halves. I'll be praying to the footballing gods that Ryan McGeever's knee can be healed this week.

Leaves us with O'Neil, Orsi, McKnight, Muir and Hopkirk on the bench. Assuming that the permanently injured Maley, Syvertsen and the non-existent Lamont don't reaapear.

I'm hearing that McGeever's injury may not be a quick-healer.
