Sons' sorrow

why would it not be?

If Gordon is anywhere near full fitness I can't imagine that no full-time side would take a chance on him. I'm sure Sevco and Hearts, to name but a few, would be in the queue ahead of us, sadly.

Fair enough although Robinson spent several years in the wilderness at Ibrox whilst Ewings appeared in a Champions League qualifier. Raith let in 61 goals and finished 7th, Sons finished 5th letting in 64. Robinson ain't any better than either of our keepers last season.

So no he wouldn't be an improvement. Not at all.

Jazz spent 3 years in the wilderness at Motherwell, as have many players in Scottish football, I don't see that as something to hold against him. He was only at Raith since January I think, Raith had McGurn out injured most of the season and young Laidlaw in goals. Comparing the team stats isn't a fair reflection on both keepers and I can't be arsed trawling through the fixtures to work them out.

I find it a bit baffling that you can confidently say that Robinson won't be an improvement.

Peter Coleman jimmy cook davie Wilson were all useful corner takers but.Charlie gallagher and chic charnley could drop a ball on a sixpence from fifty yards.

Fantastic - great days. People talk about the current time being one of the best for the Sons but that truly was a golden era - first division football, semi-final of the Scottish Cup, final of the Spring Cup, Graham Sinclair being capped at U21 level, some great players and club legends, especially Johnny Graham and some seriously good former Old Firm players.

Would our current team beat all these old legends mentioned above?

Long gone are the days of half time fags and pre match pints & pies. Fitness levels these days are better than they have ever been with sports scientists, specialist diets and what not. Surely today's modern day athletes would triumph?

As i'm a youngster I am unable to compare but I'm sure a few of you old boys could.

Afraid we only reached the semi final of the Spring Cup where we lost to the bankies but it was great days indeed. In 1976 we played three semi finals within a fortnight

The semi! My thinking was that as it was at a neutral ground it was the final but I remember it now. It was a good game but the Bankies didn't deserve to win 3-1.

What was the Spring Cup?

A short-lived, ie one-off trophy which was competed for in season 1975/76 by all clubs outwith the newly-formed Premier Division. Sons emerged from a section that included Stenny, Arbroath and Albion Rovers; we then knocked out Raith despite having been 0-2 down and facing a (missed) penalty at Kirkcaldy in the first leg tie - if memory serves me right Ian Wallace ran amok at Boghead in the second leg.

We then disposed of Falkirk over two legs before slumping to a 3-1 defeat from the Bankies in front of 3000 at Firhill, a game which featured a very rare error by 'keeper Laurie Wiliams (now there was a goalkeeper....). Airdrie beat the Bankies 4-2 in the final at Firhill the following Monday night, an evening when I should have attended tutorials at Stow College :whistle

...But back to the keepers. Robinson is erratic, eccentric and under-sized; the much-vaunted Michael McGovern, currently getting smoke blown up his arse on another thread, has never impressed greatly (witness the two goals he lost on his last visit to the BBS) whilst Thomas Flynn is in reality no more reliable than what we have right now - Jordan's free-kick anyone, and various other offences ?

With Lucky Letheren departing upstairs that leaves Zander Clark of QoS as easily the most impressive goalkeeper remaining in this division.

Glad we sorted that out folks.

Thing is, you'll struggle to name any keeper who has been particularly impressive against the bold Sons (except Leprechaun Letheren) given our ability to slam in multiple goals from all angles.

We don't give opposition keepers an easy time of it.
