Sons' sorrow

Recommended Posts

I'd have been happy keeping who we had, never mind bringing more folk through the gate.
People stop going to games for any number of reasons. I'll respect those reasons but it doesnt change the fact that the lower our crowds are then the less money we have available to spend. The less money we spend then the poorer our results are likely to be. Poorer results? More fans become bored with football and stay away.
At some point we need to either get more folk through the gates or face up to where this decline is going to take us. We need people to actually value Scottish football, to see it as something worth supporting and to get themselves out of the house, the pub, the bookies or whatever else they do on a Saturday afternoon and get along to a game.
On the flipside, last season's average attendance is up almost 250 compared to what it was 20 years ago.

If we win games fans will turn up. It's that simple.

Peterhead and Clyde were winning games last season so their attendances went up. Just as we had 1,100 against Elgin in the Third Division, but 500 against Queen of the South in the Championship.

Which, unless we want to spend money we don't have, is unsustainable.

If we can only ever rely on fans following a winning team then we're in trouble because we don't have the money to build a winning team and we don't have anybody willing and able to throw money at us.

Something needs to give. We need people to actually value having a professional football team in their local community. If they don't then we really are trapped in a cycle of decline that we're not guaranteed of escaping. If we can't find a way to get more fans through the gates then we're in for a very painful future.

You don't need to spend unsustainable money to be successful and get fans in. Sure it makes things a heck of a lot easier, but money is no guarantee of success. Just look at Ian Murray and Stevie Aitken for evidence of that.

Edit: Arbroath obviously had a great season last year, and would pay decent wages, but I refuse to believe they spent unsustainable funds.

That's a better scoring rate than Ben Armour had for us 😉

The problem Ryan had was he scored more own goals than for us, at the time he was a liability anywhere near or goal. As folk say that was some time ago & he did look better at Queens.

Eight games, two goals for and at least three into the wrong net.

I mean fair play to him, that's quite an impact 🤣

Apart from the placement of the Joka logo I quite like those kits (sorry!)

we wore stripes from the late 1880s to the 1920’s ... when we were one of the best teams in the country, if not the world ... before changing to hoops. East Fife adopted them just as we were ditching them, if anything they stole the idea from us as a tribute to the superior team! :)

hope we’re pairing it with white shorts for the full retro effect!

Yesterday's kit reveal has black shorts.

I guess most people know I'm a bit of a kit obsessive, but it really is a hiding to nothing - impossible to please everyone! It6 looks like we're at a level/budget where we just can't justify bespoke kits, at which point I'd rather see us in yellow/black than a plain white kit. Given the current Joma catalogue I think the kit was a fair choice, there are maybe a couple of others I'd have been just as happy with but there really is no perfect option, everything in their catalogue uses Empire Yellow except the amber strip that was formerly our away kit.

Some of those tops look really nice, would be interesting to see how many tops we shift this season compared to the last 3/4 i.e. where the top was generally welcomed vs the budget catalogue stinker.

Realistically we cant expect much and the whole 'top 4' thing was to get people excited and buying STs.Thats all.

That's where I have an issue. Not because I feel conned into buying a season ticket, I would have bought one anyway, but I would rather there was a fair assesment of our target and constraints.

I don't need to be promised a winning team, I'll buy in whatever the deal is, I just ask for transparency and a little empathy on how things impact us supporters.

Quite the impact for us aswell it seems.

Aye i take your point but maybe for most Sons fans the board thought it would be better to up their aim-rightly or wrongly.
